I’m thinking [maybe dreaming] of putting together an F-open midrange rifle chambered in 6mm Dasher and, I’d like to do it on the cheap. I know what you’re thinking… but, by this, I mean using parts I already own.
First, a question: What makes a good action -good- for this role? I think the answer is one that can support the weight/stress of a 1.25” no taper barrel that is 28”-30” in length and can be bedded in a way to optimize stability. The stock will have to do its part as well.
I have two rifles I use for F-T/R and I’d like to consider pressing one into F-Open service. One is a BAT VR repeater bedded in a GRS X-Eater stock chambered in .223 and, I do have the .308 bolt for it.
The other is a Panda F-Class bedded in a second GRS X-Eater chambered in .308. The barrel channels in both stocks are already set up for a 1.25” barrel. The Panda has that giant flat bottom and seems like the logical choice though it is constructed mostly of aluminum. The VR seems very stout though, in repeater form, the bedding (my bedding) is not as good as that of the Panda.
I’d rather use the VR action but don’t have a good reason for this choice other than the VR has a better trigger and it represents an opportunity to grind out some bedding and do a better job.
Seeking advice or guidance. Is this a bad idea? Are neither of these actions really a good choice? Should I be thinking about a new and dedicated build?
Thank you,
Henryrifle
