F-T/R Rifles

Where have all the Savage F-T/R rifles gone? There once were quite a few of them listed on GB. Now? Occasionally one is listed.

What would be a good starting point in the F-T/R game using a Remington 700? By using a 700 I can upgrade it as I go along and my wallet will allow.
Thanks.

Yep - start with whatever you have got - take a season or so to figure out what you like or don't like....then spend your money.

I started out shooting FO with a Howa and 95 vlds from 300 - 1000 - I didn't win much but the knowledge gained is serving me well now.

Would I recommend going straight to a custom - probably only for the barrel after that its about how much you want to put into the sport.

I'm told people started buying them up because they, like may of the other Savages, have been found to be the most accurate across the counter rifle available. So people bought them up. As an alternative, some guys still prefer the Winchester Model 70. But you can't go wrong with a Remington 700 or Remington 700 action (if you build one) which I believe is till a very versatile rifle for making changes or building, not to mention the cost factor. And if you are SERIOUS about wanting to compete, rub elbows or find a competition to go to (to watch) and get to know some competitors and see what they shoot. I can't think of a better way to get it right the first time especially if you decide to build a rifle. Those guys who compete know all the "tricks of the trade" and can save you lots of money. Best part is that the information those guys have and display is free so you can save up for the expensive part, building a competitive rifle. Good luck and have fun.

I like mine 😉, I just wish there were more offerings for stocks with the three bolts. Luckily a nice guy on here is selling me an adjustable buttplate for my stock.

I have one a savage ftr that shoots dime size at 100 yds with a junk according to the pros burris 40x on it. Where I shoot there is not one 700' that out shoots it at 1000 the only guy that routinely spanks it has about $8000.00 in a custom rifle and nf scope

and a 2 ounce trigger and is a nationally known shooter I shoot a couple days maybe 3 a month and turn wrenches for a living it out shoots me and my federal case reloads and my fifty yr old eyes but we have a match in 3 weeks and by 15 yr old can just plain out shoot me. Half a minute or less at 600 And what won the match last year was a savage in 308 that out shot the $8000 284 custom in a tie breaker. Probably just luck or is it

Probably holding on to them seeing as how the F/TR Champ shoots one - action wise anyway.
Savages shoot sir. They ain't pretty and they ain't smooth, but they shoot.
Now I'm probably gonna have some folks beat me up about this but most all of my info is experiencial and obviously I'm only one guy so take this for what it's worth. I have 3 target actions w/ the Savage stocks. My last one is F/TR the other 2 are open guns.
For start up:
1. Use the Savage stock but get a good bedding job.
2. Have he bolt face trued up by your gunsmith (He will then probably have to move the barrel in a bit) Savage tumbles the floating head at the factory. This gives them a convex issue on the face. (So much for the floating bolt head - once this is done the floating bolt head is no longer moot)
3. (This is the part I may get beat up about) When I got my F/TR model and did all this I was still getting some nice 3+ inch groups at 300. I was just about to change the barrel when I said "What the heck it ain't shooting anyway, I'll try some of Tubbs fire lapping bullets" I know that Tubbs doesn't make this claim but Whoa! did those groups tighten up. The gun went on to win 2 local matches (and half a state match) before Jade Delchambre and Tony Arcemont started kicking booty (Craig Martin and Mickey Brinkman weren't there at the two I won - I do a good job of cherry picking matches). LOL. That barrel ain't no X-Meister but it will definitely stay in the 10.

I advise you to shoot it before doing any of this except the bedding. Do the bedding unless you want to be counting the number of inch-pounds on three action screws for the rest of your life.

This is just one man's experience. Your mileage WILL most probably vary. Oh, and if you can't find a used one - buy a new one. Don't let 150 bucks keep you away. Savage is a great start-up recipe. You might be surprised when you look at your score ranking in a national or international level match.
