Hi Darrell...I dont shoot F class or TR but do shoot Benchrest ,,,It seems counter productive to limit within the ctg/cal to keep the rifle inacurate or to limit its wind bucking ability,,,should we limit the .223 to 69 gr bullets,,,,next someone will want to limit the bullet brand or powder/primer type,,,shooting is to make us better marksman and to improve our firearms/weapons to have superior firepower (militarily speaking) which allows us to hit our target/objective at longer distances and with more reliability,,,,it doesnt cost any more to cut a chamber with .050" FB or .250",,,,,these guns in all classes are "purpose" built,,,,I hope this makes sense and I havenot meant it as criticism,,,,Roger

First of all to all posting on this today, this is a dead subject, this ship has sailed, you are posting on a zombie thread. This was a balloon that Darrel floated last yr on 4 different boards, and he got the answers he was looking for. It's no longer a discussion.

Dude, you are so far wrong. In 2006 the Nationals were held at Oak Ridge, we have 25 shooting points, and I don't think the range was stressed. Last yr we shot at Camp Perry for the first time, and at the Nationals at Raton we had just over 200 shooters. This yr we've already got 360+ registered and the registration cutoff is in a week for a match in 2 months. F class may well be the fastest growing NRA sanctioned shooting class.

and, nobody I know anywhere in the US is shooting a 223 in long range F-TR, at least nobody at the top of the game. I shoot with a sling and Irons shooter who has done very well with one, and I have a 223 for my 600 yard gun, but at 1000 nobody is using it.

XTR, you said it perfectly!!! ;)

No, Hell No!!! There is always a crybaby in the bunch. If you can't run with the big dogs. Stay on the porch!!!!

Ever give that one moa target a try with a sling? Not trying to sling (pun intended) any mud, but it irks me when I see or hear that statement. If you have never shot with a sling and I know that many F/Class shooters haven't, make a statement about the easy target. Wanna shoot a hard target , how about the 10 meter air rifle target, or the 200 yard Schutzen target with a .22, or the 300 Meter target. Now those are some hard targets. The F/Class target isn't all that hard. What makes it hard is what is between your ears!

I'm pretty sure I hear of a lot more 1,000 yard cleans in sling than F-Class, so maybe that's an indicator of the difficulty of each target. :o

F-Class and Match Rifle targets are each about the right size for the discipline. HM F-Open shooters only rarely beat HM Match Rifle shooters on their respective targets. Given the scores, that indicates the targets are sized appropriately.

Have F/Class shooters considered using the 500 yard target at a 1000 yards? That way you guys and gals would have the benefit of a full half moa target. With that kind of target, you could hit paper and still shoot a miss.

Well crud...NOW I finally looked at the date the thread was started. You'll get my thoughts anyway ;)

My vote goes for limiting it to 156gr maximum (following the Palma rules) and then reverting back to the std LR target for F-TR in NRA Registered events.

1) This would directly support the efforts of Palma shooting regarding wind coaching because bullet drifts would be identical.

2) Lowered cost to shooters via increased barrel life and less specialized equipment to still be competitive. A Palma shooter could play the game without the need of a fast-twist barrel and high-buck optics, switching their rifle back/forth easily.

3) With the larger target you may actually have a few HM's in the division.

4) Want to separate the wind-readers and wind-strategists from the wannabe's? Shoot 155's.

The one thing that always piqued my interest about Palma was that everyone was on an even keel. This is particularly true when they used to have matches and tryouts where beauty was not the slightest factor and it all boiled down to who could shoot that very same bullet the best back at 1000yds.

My 2 pennies
