F-Open: Narrowing the cartridge selection

I have been shooting F-Open since 2011. I have shot at Bayou Rifle Club in Houston and now in Arizona. I have shot at several clubs almost extending from one end of this country to the other. I have shot A LOT of cartridges during that time, under just about every weather condition and at most distances. After awhile you begin to learn a few things, even with my limited ability to grasp "things". A few of the "things" I have learned are the subject of this thread. There are so many cartridges that are fully capable of winning at almost any range that the choices can become overwhelming. Looking back over the years and trying many cartridges as well as watching others win and set records gives you a perspective of how to narrow the selection down to a manageable level. Here are my thoughts.

For 300 yard competition: In my opinion, this is one of the most difficult of distances to win at and tying or setting a national record is going to be extremely difficult. It is NOT hard to score well, however, it is very difficult to WIN! Unless you have very adverse conditions, dropping even a point can move you to 2nd place or even further down the list. Many of the shooters say they do not like to shoot 300 yards because it is TOO close or too easy! Hogwash! My bet is that the reason they don't like to shoot a 300 yard competition is that they do not have a rifle capable of extreme accuracy OR they, themselves, are not capable of shooting a 600 with a minimum of 45+ "Xs"! If I were to shoot at 300 yards, I would get a SUPER accurate cartridge that burns as little of powder as possible. This will keep barrels heating up to a minimum and aide in a high "X" count. The cartridges I would be looking at are, in descending order: 1.) 6mm Dasher; 2.) 6mm BRX or 3.) a 6mmBR, shooting 105-108gr bullets. To my way of thinking, winning is one thing>>>but at 300, beating that 31X count should be the goal! If there are better cartridges than these three, I don't know of them. I know there are many variations of them that would work just as well, but let's keep this thing easy in order to MINIMIZE the plethora of cartridges.

For 500 / 600 yard competition: This is one of the most enjoyable distances to shoot F-Open at. It is "easy" yet can be very difficult indeed! Scores can be high, however, if the wind is giving you even a modicum of consternation, scores can become difficult. Since you can never tell how the wind is going to act on any given competitive day, a cartridge capable of "holding it's own" in a contrary wind, becomes the thing to have. Seven (7) MMs and the BIG 30s rule the roost here. Certainly under relatively "calm" conditions, the 6s and 6.5s can be difficult to beat. However, my bet is that over the course of a year, at a dozen or so matches, the 7s and 30s will eventually win out over time! The 7s and BIG 30s can be VERY, VERY accurate and will buck the wind better than any 6s or 6.5s. So here is my choice for 500 / 600 yard Open: 284 Shehane, 7 SAUM, shooting a 180 or a .300WSM shooting a 200 gr bullet.

For 1000 yard competition: This is difficult for anyone, for me it is VERY difficult. I have a "problem" consistently getting good scores and winning. I get my "bone" from time to time, however, it is not as often as I would like! For this level of competition, in MY opinion, either a .300WSM or a 7 SAUM or 7 SAUM Imp. are THEE tickets to being successful at 1000 yards, at least on a reasonably successful basis. The SAUMs should be shooting either the 195s or the 184s. The .300WSM should be shooting the 215s or the 230s, IF you can manage them. They are very accurate, kick no more than a Shehane (at least I don't notice much difference) and can push the bullets a bit faster. Reading and BEATING the wind is hard at 1000, these cartridges give you the best hope to do that.

These cartridges are certainly not the "be all / end all" for either mid-range or long-range F-Open. These will just narrow the "field" to a manageable level with cartridges that WILL work and WILL work VERY, VERY well! This could help when agonizing over "which cartridge" should I get.

Older, New Kid to F-Open ( Long time Palma Guy).

Finishing up my Build of a .284 for the 8.9&1000 yard run .
Dasher and .308 for in between .

Time will tell of the wind reading skills ?

Just curious on 300 yard f class. How does it work do they still pull targets at that range if they don’t have e targets or is the scorer just looking at it with a spotting scope?

These can be paper targets (pulled every shot), e-targets (not pulled), or the reduced size NRA MR63FCA target center that has been covered with a [removable] 12" Shoot-N-C so that the shots viewed in the spotting scope (pulled only between matches). There are also a few clubs that have 300 yd matches without the Shoot-N-C overlay, but it can be very difficult to spot holes in the target black using a spotting scope without it. Because the NRA target overlayed with a Shoot-N-C only gets pulled after each match, it is not absolutely necessary for a range to have target carriers in order to host F-Class matches.

Thanks. Always thought it would be fun to have a 300 yard match but we only have pits at 600 and 1k.

NOT! For F Open the straight .284 is King. Listen to what Zilla wrote (I was scoring a target over from his when he shoot a record at 1k)... Go look at winners of big matches. Even the 284 shehane is about gone the way of the dodo... The 180 hybrid has a speed it likes and you get that with a straight 284. The other "big boys" require someone very very skilled in managing the gun. HOF short range bench rest shooter had 284 did great in F Open, got a 7SAUM scores went down. If you do a search you'll fine that guys had to slow the 300mag down to effectively manage the rifle...

There are folks that dislike recoil / torque and there are others who take the time to manage it. To the shooters who take the time to manage their .300WSM, they will be at or near the top most of the time. If you are at either the Nationals or the SouthWest Nationals, and had a "count" of the amount of 284s or Shehanes against the "count" of .300WSMs you would find it very lopsided in favor of the .284s. Yet in the last few years, at Mid-Range and Long Range you have had some .300WSMs at or near the top! What do you think would happen if the reverse were true and you had ten times as many .300WSMs as .284s? Do you honestly think that they would hold as many top positions as the .300WSM currently does being outnumbered so badly? Give it a few more years and I believe you will see a large increase in .300WSMs at the Nationals and the SouthWest Nationals. Once there is more of an even number of each, then we will see which one wins the most.. But that will take a few years for the .300WSM to catch up in numbers..

I think everyone has a favorite. Personally I like the 260 with 140ish bullets for 3-600 yd matches. 6mm’s are fine and do well but when the wind picks up I like the extra BC of the 6.5’s.

At 1k the 7’s rule. I shoot a 284 and I’m pleased with it. I’ve lost to 7RSAMS and 300 WSM’s but not as often as you might think.

Seems the biggest deference I see is at the end of the day after the match. 284 guys/ladies sitting around laughing, drinking a beer or soda and trying to decide where to go for dinner.

Big 7mm and 300wsm shooters complaining and rubbing lidocaine ointment on there shoulders and wondering if they’ll shoot tomorrow?

Just my observations, take ‘em for what their worth.

One of my fav cartridges of ALL time is a .260A.I. I had many of them. I shot my very best scores at 600 yards with them. They are SUPER accurate! I shot a 600 yard match and it was a 200-17X. Good but not GREAT! However, what was great was that all 17 Xs were in such a tight group that NONE of the pasties even touched the circle of the X ring! That my friend is accuracy! Having said that, my .300WSMs are within a hair's breadth of my .260A.I.s and maybe just as accurate. Like you stated, when the wind blows, the BIG 7s and 30s will outperform the 6.5s. Over time, match after match, the .300WSM will win more matches than the 6.5s>>>>if you are in a location where "calm" conditions are not as often as windy conditions. As far as recoil is concerned, to be honest with you, when I am in full focus mode, I don't even notice the recoil..

Ben is doing pretty awesome with his 300 WSM and I'm very happy for him. But, there are a few shooters who will show him what a 284 WIN/ Shehane can do this weekend. :) Let's get ready to rumble!

We have a cadre of excellent shooters with .284s! As a matter of fact, I call them a Cabal! They are daunting to shoot against>>>but competition is what I love!

Gee, what ever happened with the .296 caliber that some guys in Canada were trying a few years back? Half way between a 7mm and a 30. Edit: I just looked it back up. It was a guy from Wyoming that started the .296, the bullets came from Canada initially.
