F Open cartidge question

If a guy was wanting to build a 7mm. F Open rifle what would be the choice of calibers ? Most likely a 1000 yard rig. Would like to hear from competitors as to what works and what doesn't.
Any input greatly appreciated.

Keith- at the risk of hijacking the thread, a quick question for you. I have my (first) straight .284 about ready to go so have to think about loads for 180s. I have heaps of H4350 ( ADI 2209) on hand but was wondering of H4831SC ( ADI 2213SC) might be better. Any comments appreciated

Probably your barrel will answer that question.

I have used a .284 Ack Imp and now have gone back to .284 Win no neck turn using Berger 180gr Hybrids with H4831SC. I use it at 900yds to 1000yds and is very accurate for me.

There are actually 2 ways of looking at this. 1.) Performance and 2.) Longevity... Several friends of mine have gone to the 7mm SAUM Improved. It can push the Berger 195s faster than the Shehane does a 180. Run the ballistics on the difference. They are not even in the same Zip-Code! However, 1000 rounds is about all you can expect! Any other .284 based cartridge will last 1700+ rounds, many will hit 2000 rounds. That is literally twice the barrel life! The question is "How much are you willing to pay for performance"? If you shoot year round like most southern and southwestern states do, you will go thru a barrel about every 6-8 months. OR shoot a .284, or it's variants, and replace the barrel about every 18 months!

I think it's about 50/50 split for 4350 vs 4831sc. I use 4350 for my straight 284

I have a new 7 saum. It is one of Speedy's works of art. To quote Doug Marketa from forged in fire. It will SHOOT! So far it has been extremely easy to tune. I'm shooting the 184 @ 3010 fps. There is Absoultly no stress on the Brass. It has repeatedly shot 5 shot groups in the 3" with 18mph winds. It's almost like cheating. What is you reason for competing? Highmaster, winning or just competing? If I wanted to be competitive chamber up a couple extra barrels and wear them out.

I "third" the use of a 7mm. Have both 284 and 7rsaum rifles. Easy to tune and the recoil even from the rsaum is easy on the shoulder with a #22 rifle. Just stay with with 7mm.
