F Class target question Part Deux

And they're even more better in walk and paste to see the holes through the spotter scope. 3 of us shooting tactical against each other recently unanimously mutinied and made our own white targets to put up.

In a heavy mirage, you will see one white mess with no aiming point. Rather have a dancing, distorted circular black to aim than a dancing, distorted white square.

Ok, I’ll stir the pot. Why are we still using iron sight targets. White targets with black rings are easier to see for the shooter and score for the puller. :)

You sure about that? Heavy mirage would make the target disappear. I recall several years ago that someone shot at white targets somewhere in UK in heavy mirage and it was a train wreck.

They also use a diamond shape orange shot marker. On a heavy mirage day, you don't want to try to find that spotter in the white. It was barely visible in the black. More magnification only makes it worse. The marker is hung from the hole versus using a center spindle. If you're lucky, that marker will flutter in the breeze enough to see it.

Can you not just invert all of the colors on the target, giving you a white inner circle on a black backer. Which would give you something to aim at in heavy mirage and also black rings on white for the middle?

How about a white 10ring area for aiming point

We are still part of sling shooting. Sling shooting is still very big at some ranges. All matches are held jointly.

Main target faces are printed for sling shooting with an F class center glued on for the F class shooters.

I've never seen a full target face with strictly F class rings. I have seen many ranges that don't use the correct target for mid range F class though.

I'm a service rifle sling shooter that enjoys shooting Mid Range Prone with my service rifle if there isn't a XTC match going on.

Fairly new here but noticing this forum is very heavy Benchrest and F Class Shooters Populated.

Seems to me like F class is much more like Benchrest than Sling shooting.
Has there been many / any discussions here that maybe F Class should be in with Benchrest and not Slings ?

You obviously have not been to a benchrest competition. It is definitely its own world

I've never seen the Benchrest section at a Highpower match. Is it down on the end with the sling shooters? Maybe I need to start walking down there.

I've never seen benchrest be shot prone and slow fire either.

Both you and Russell are just going to have to walk down to the far end of the line where all the BR shooters are lurking. Trust me - you'll spot them right away. They don't wear the leather "lobster steamer" jackets or shoot rifles without any support, but they do sit upright at a bench and shoot a bunch of shots before their puller even has a chance to cycle the target one time. BTW - as a penance for your sarcasm, you two will also have to start loading all your ammo at matches from now on. ;)

(I'm pretty fanatical about preserving the outside of the lines.)

That means you are probably a meticulous and conscientious puller when it comes to your fellow shooter's groups and scores.

Good on you.

This forum is what it is. One day when you don't see so good Fclass might look a lil better.

As silly as it seems to award more than one point for the outermost ring, and with all due appreciation for the foreigners’ abandonment of base 10 everything, the obvious choice is the 10X target. Because that’s what proper targets look like. I’m still not entirely keen on allowing cartridges other than .308, for that matter.

The equipment may be similar to benchrest, and to be honest, I don’t think there is much difference between shooting off the ground or a bench when you’re using a massive rest to support the rifle. But the course of fire is very much high power. Benchrest really is a different game when it comes to the actual actual shooting. You can hold a sling match and an f class match on the same line at the same time. You can’t do that with benchrest and f class.

If you are shooting the X target, you are somewhat shooting against the odds. X 10 9 8 7 6 5.. No 4 3 2 1 .... Miss counts as a zero. V target V 5 4 3 2 1 0 . There is a difference.
Sorry guys and gals but history lesson coming up. Back in the days of M1s, the accuracy was improving rapidly. In OTC shooting, many 250s were being recorded on V targets. I even shot a few cleans at 1000 yards on the V target. At that point the decision was made to make a target which related to minute of angle and to make it more difficult to shoot a clean target, thus was born the 10x target. As a side note, in talking to V target shooting countries that all claim that if you shoot a miss on a 10x target it is harder to catch up and win. I believe this comes form them mostly relating to team matches where as in the U.S. we do not care that much about team matches.

FYI, the two targets pictured in the first post of this thread are current F Class Long Range targets. Nothing OTC about them. Both have a nearly 1 MOA 10 ring. 10 inches. As a side note to you, come to the SWN's or the F Class Nationals in Raton and tell me team matches aren't a big deal. You are sadly mistaken.

What Wheeler said. Team matches have risen in popularity by a vast amount in the last 10 years or so. The range is filled on Team Day at the SWN.
