F class sighters

Yeah - we like Aussie and the UK have only 2 too. I don't have a problem with the US rules - and if the sport wants to develop internationally, we should probably move toward the US rules. I would prefer (as an ex pistol shooter) a move to the US target too - it's the same size, but scores from 10, rather than the 6 for F-class and 5 for the sling guys.

Treasonable? I'll check with Harry and Meghan.

Unlimited sighters..??
Why not just 2..!!
Aussie here so I could be wrong. In USA, are sighters unlimited only on the first range of the day? Or do they have unlimited sighters for every range? I do like the idea of unlimited sighters for the first range so people can safely do their blow off shots without having to pull over onto a quiet bit of road on the way to the range. Either this or they allow a blow off session before they lift the targets up for each shooter first relay of the day as is done in many countries.

I'm personally in favor of a 2 or 3 minute blow-off that doesn't strike targets before the first target of the day, followed by 2 sighters.

The idea is to foul in the barrel after it was cleaned.

I've seen far too many shooters using unlimited sighters to timidly test the waters to see if they want to jump in, or tune their rifles (I've even seen one character on the line with a seating die).

I think we're drifting away from the basics of the game with unlimited sighters - marksmanship and wind reading.

For F-class, generally we only have unlimited sighters on the first match of the day. I think it is up to the match director. I have been to matches where it is less and agree with you. For those matches, I show up early and go to a blow off area and zero my rifle. Others do the same. It is just more practical to allow unlimited sighters for the first string.

I am a sling shooter but what I see on ranges with E targets are guys doing load
development during sighters. They bring up multiple lots of ammo and shoot groups and take the time allotted then go for record and fire their 20 shots in the last 5 minutes.

It is within the current rules but it seems to take the match feel out of the day. Know your dope , step up to the line and have at it.

I guess I would be good with say five sighter in the first line and two at the rest.

What made me ask the question was watching Erik's last video at Bayou rifle club and see him adjusting his tuner and had I think 13 siters before he shot for record..

Sighters? At our local 1000 yard matches there are no sighters. The MD draws slips to see which squad starts at which distance. It may be at the 235/400 yard stage or possibly the 900/1000 stage. No sighters any time. Every shot is a scored shot.

My longrange rimfire matches I have 15 different distances/racks, I do allow each shooter time to check their zero before starting. After that they get 5 sighters to use at their discretion due to stage difficulty, target size or to check windage. Sometimes I give a bonus of 1 point for any unused sighters.

Pretty amazing how much better you get reading Mother Natures conditions and knowing your gun/ammo when that first shot is scored. I do allow extra sighters based on a shooters skill level or a competitor really struggling but upper level shooters are there for a reason.

If everybody has the same total time who cares what they do with it?
There ya go! :D Frequently on those days that involve 2 or more 30-minute 1000-yard matches per day, and I have two rifles that I might want to shoot over the day, and the latter matches only allow 2 sighting shots; during the first sighter period, I've shot both rifles to tune zero of each...plenty of time.

Unlimited sighters..??
Why not just 2..!!
Why not 3? Or none? Or some random # drawn from a hat?

Personally I like full bore with 2 convertible, but I also see unlimited be quite useful at club matches. I’ve seen a lot of people at club matches who had never shot 1000 and had only a general idea what their come up should be, and I’ve also seen even more experienced sling shooters who just put the front sight back on, or a new front sight, and might be in the trees 10 feet high.

A lot of people don’t get to practice at 1000.

The more confidence you have in your equipment, ammo and yourself, the less sighters you need.

Not everyone starts out as a cold blooded competitor. Unlimited sighters on the first match are nice for the casual competitor to get comfortable, take some practice shots (lots of people only get the chance to shoot AT a match).. See what the wind is doing. It's your time block, use it how you want.
