F-Class - If there was one thing you could do...

Short answer: read the wind better. The statement that leads to a better answer: It depends on what level you are shooting at. If you are already shooting 95%+ (High master, or damn near) regularly, then its fine tuning here and there. If you are shooting 70%, then there is probably something major you need to fix

First and foremost, make good wind calls and know when to shoot and when to stop.

Second would be to get really good bullets and barrels. A good bullet and good barrel will make a good shooter, really good. Get both at the same time and it makes you feel like you've mastered it.

Third would be to make it to as many matches as you can. You can't win if you dont go and you can't get better if you don't shoot. There is only so much you can do at the reloading bench. I have to travel 5 hours round trip to shoot all my matches, and I'm up there 1-3 times a month....

As a first choice I'd prefer to get my muzzle velocity up to around forty five thousand feet per second, but I'll settle for being able to read the wind better. Realistically, I think forcing myself to wait for conditions is an achievable goal and is at least in the realm of possibility.

Get a good scope and shoot at white paper at 300yds. Watch every hit and group size. Dial your load in to it's best. While doing that You will see what the wind does to your group, when you get your groups down to 1/3rd MOA another 6 months and it will be 1/4 moa. Then you will have the confidence in the gun and yourself to be a competitor.

I live 2 km from 900 m range I like to practice when conditions are bad
Lots of mirage, twitching winds, strong winds, sun & clouds.these conditions usually appear on a 3 day shoot.
If you don't learn in these conditions you will get smoked in a match

If I can assume the OP is a relatively new FC shooter I would recommend he find a very experience HM or Master class competitor to act as his mentor. This along with shooting in multi-day championships will do more to increasing a newbies scores than anything else. Multi-day championships act to reinforce things learned the days before and allow contact with to better shooters and good free knowledge in most cases.

Learn from the High Masters!
I won a gold (match winner) and a silver (day agg) on the last day @ US Nats 2015 after watching through a spotting scope how the Team BERGER-SEB shot their targets. (I also received 3 golds as their team captain).
I just sat right behind Jim Murphy as the coach and watch him carefully through the spotting scope i.e how he pick the wind and make the wind call, the patience etc.
Also shot a team match with Jim Webster, Ellis Berry, and Tom Hittle. I learn how Jim steer me to shoot my target and how they were coaching each others, too. --- It was indeed a GREAT experience and really a hi-steep learning curve for me! Now I have more confidence and a much better wind/mirage reader than ever. Thank you again, gentlemen!

My point is, you'll learn a lot from people like Them!
They don't tell you what to do, they only show you how to do it right.
