f-class barrel question

what contour do most of the f-class rifles wear? Also what barrel lenght. I am building a rig to shoot the 6BR This is my first build for this purpose. I am a newbie to f-class. Lee

LEE,

from general observation, bbl's are 30' long and are .900 at the pointy end. have seen some 28, some 32., some .750 and a bunch 1.25.

i don't think that bbl length and dia. are the real big thing in the f- game.

as in any shooting disc. if you got it,you'll win.

you have to have a good rest good scope, good stock.

BUT, if you can't tune you load to the gun, YOUR SUNK!!!

the short range game [300, 500] is very brutal!! one slip and your history.

in mid range-600, some lee way, and long range you can sometime bluff your way through.

it's a fun game - great to shoot x's, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

good luck, see you onthe range

I would recommend a barrel that finishes out at 28'-30' in a 1:8 twist and get it as heavy as possible and still make weight. The recoil in a 6mmBR is minimal but the heavy barrel will reduce heat build up and make the recoil even milder, thus the movement of the gun on the bags and in recoil less.

You will LOVE the 6mmBR. The normal 'go to' load is 30 grains of VARGET with a Lapua case, CC-450 primer and a 105 grain SMK seated .010' off. This load should shoot in most any 6mmBR. ,A Note: My sife's gun will not tolerate this load and I use VV550 in her gun.)

Are you planning to shoot mid-range or long range? if you have any intention at all of shooting long range build something other than 6br its a wonderful little round but it would be very tough to be competitive at 1000 with one.

If your going to shoot 1,000 regularly, I agree 6BR is a little light. 6XC or 6-6.5X47 are good choices in 105-108 bullets. German Salazar shoots 6XC with 115's and won the AZ state LR championships with it last year. Some folk's around here think it's not enough cartridge for 115's and perfer a 6SuperX/ 6CM/ 243BRK type cartridge. I'm up in the air.

I'd probably throw a heavy Palma contour on a F-class open 6mm. Should give you lots of barrel and keep you out of weight problems. My 02

My preferred lengths are 26'-28'. In .308 I'm currently running a 26' essentially Remington profile, it will be replaced by a 27'-28' medium Palma taper sometime this year. The 6.5 X 284 has a 26' pretty much heavy varmint taper, 1.25' for the first 3' or so tapering down to .90 at the business end, larger diameter standard length action, solid bottom).

I want to be able to hit the velocity node I want with the least amount of barrel it takes to get there, without going nuts on the pressure. Shorter barrels are stiffer, seem to be easier to tune for, and hanging a 30' or 32' straight or heavy profile barrel off of a receiver, especially a repeater) seems to ask a lot of the bedding and receiver.

Now something like an Eliseo tube gun, well that might be another story entirely and IMO the barrel profile wouldn't lever nearly as bad as a standard stock, especially if the receiver was glued in. See the story about German Salazars Eliseo rifle, I've handled it and it's a pretty nice set up. I think it would make a fine F/TR set up keeping an eye on making weight. Buttstock might need work to ride a rear bag though but since it's modular it shouldn't be a problem to glue and screw something together.

So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Recomendations:

As stated for 600 or less a 6mmBR is one of the finest cartridges made.

For 600- 1000 yards you might consider the 6mmBRX or 6mmDasher.

Both add about 150-200 fps with a 31 inch barrel.

I build quite a few of these two 6mms and my shooters shoot light, medium and heavy weight Palma contours. I would recomend 30-32' barrels. This will get you 3000-3150 fps with 105-108 grain bullets in a 1:8 twist barrel. I preticularilly like the Broughton 5C. There certainly is nothing wrong with the Krieger, Bartlein, or RockCreek barrels.

Varget, Reloader 15, H4350, VV550 all are good powders.

The 6mmBRX will load from a magazine better because of its shoulder angle. You can also use standard 6mmBR dies backed out .098'. The Daher requires special dies.

There are some really good threads on these cartridges on this site. Spend your time wisely and read up on your choices.

I think ballistic evidence supports that there is little practical advantage to exceeding 28' in the BR. In a game where weight tops out at 22 pounds, a 30' pipe can eat up room for other goodies real fast. The Krieger #17 Heavy Vermint/target is a good example of an ideal F-Class profile.

I have been playing with my BR's and Berger 105's to a mile and they work like a charm. Anything over 500 yards takes an exponentially greater level of shooter input to make the most difference, regardless of your cartridge.
