F class 300 yard

Would the Tikka T3x Varmint in 223 be good enough for 300 yard f class shooting ?
I am sure it would work just fine.. However, contrary to many opinions about 300 F-Class shooting as being "too easy", I believe it is very tough! It is NOT hard to score very well, BUT it is very difficult to win! Most of the 300 yard F-Class shooting I used to do, prior to moving to Arizona, would take a 600-HIGH FORTY to 50+ "X" count to win. If the wind kicked up pretty good, a 598 might win! I think it is NOT a matter of "too easy" so it's boring! I think that if the truth be told, most naysayers simply, for whatever reason, can not compete at that level of precision! That's just my opinion... So I think you could do well>>>but would you win, may or may not, be another story..

I would be very interested to hear how that rifle works out for you. I have been practicing with my T3 in .223 for F-class. It is amazingly accurate for a factory rifle, but it has a light barrel. Please, let us know how it works out.

The Tikka sporting rifles are excellent - but if you find a "tactical" model with the heavier barrel, you probably have a match winning gun. The only issue I have with the standard barrel is heating. Firing a 10/12 shot string can cause accuracy issues and throat erosion.

You could also look at a Savage Model 10 - if you can find a "Police version" with a 26in barrel, it's good for 600 yds with 69g pills. I use Nosler, but any premium bullet can work well.

Shoot and enjoy. FTR rules!

I have a custom .223 F-TR "trainer" that is probably not set up all that differently than your Tikka. I used it in 300 yd matches regularly, shooting FGMM 77 gr commercial ammunition. Did quite well with it. The lighter pills definitely get pushed around a LOT more than the 80 gr (or heavier) bullets in handloads if there's much wind. Nonetheless, why not go out and participate? I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with it.

IIRC Tikka Varmint has a 24 inch barrel tapering to .820 at the muzzle.
A very good rifle IMO

The good folks that run the range in Rexburg ID shoot .223's. Out to 600 they are "in the game" no doubt about it. I have seen lots of .223's on the line in F-TR and a couple of times was darn happy I wasn't shooting against them in open. :D

The Tikka T3x varmint is a heavy barrel and it says on their web site that it will not heat up. I am guessing that is because it is a 223 and not a big bore. Right ?
Why do they guarantee one MOA accuracy @ 100 yards with 3 shot groups ? Why only 3 shot groups ?

That rifle should give you a great start in TR. When you wear out that barrel put another one on with a 7” twist and keep shooting it.

The only reason is a reduced accuracy standard so they don’t have to warranty more rifles.

Load development is your friend at 300 yards. I shoot Open not TR and it’s an X count race.

I’ve only ever shot one match at 300 yards and it was the first time I had ever shot at 300. I shot a saveage 12FV that I got on sale for $250 after rebate with 69 gr TMKs. It was only my second ever competition. It was also the state championship. I came in second in the 300 yard match. Your tikka will be fine so long as it fits you.

read their web site again and with the T3x varmint they guarantee 5 shot groups one MOA at 100 yards.

I have a T-3 with a sporter Barrel that shoots a lot tighter than one minute
