Extreme vertical spread

I know I can't do anything about it , because it is factory am , but just wondering what would cause a five inch . Shooting 45/70 HSM 405 gr. bear load and the horizontal spread is probally about an inch , but verticle is 4"-5" . Would an extreme velocity spread cause that kind of verticle spread ?
Thanks , Kenneth

100 yds . Shot some 325 gr leverulution before and after , had no trouble with one inch groups . Shoot across an uncle bud bull bag and rear bunny bag . Tried letting the rifle set in the bag and tried holding the fore arm with back of hand in the bag for a more secure grip . Also was testing 308 and 30-06 loads in other rifles , had good groups with them .
If there is anything else I can list let me know .
Was really hoping the heavy ammo would shoot .
Garret makes some hot heavy loads , but man that's some expensive testing .
Anybody here know of factory heavy loads that shoot well ? rifle is a Browning 1885 Hi-wall . Thanks , Kenneth

That one is easy. When you are using bags front & rear, the rear bag supports the tapered buttstock.
When that 45 70 touches off, the rifle moves to the rear vigorously. The shooter is hanging on and pressing
down on the stock. The rifle moves backwards following the taper of the stock thus moving the buttstock down and
the muzzle up. Thus your vertical stringing.

Ok , sounds reasonable , so next time I get a chance to shoot it , I'll try shouldering it with no rear bag . Not used to shooting bores this big , guess it's learning to hold a different animal .
Thank you , Kenneth

45-70 is not my idea of a bench gun

lol , no , mine either , but I want to test ammo before I hunt with it . Not something I will shoot regularly , so I.m not interested in hand loading for it . Just trying to find a heavy load with good velocity that will shoot accurately . The Leverution 325 is plenty accurate , just want a 400 gr or bigger load . Why ? Who knows .
