Extreme Berger Jump, anyone had success?

So the rifle in question is a Abolt 2 in 300 wm. Using Berger 165gr hybrids I have to load to sammi oal spec due to mag length but this gives me a distance to lands of about .26”
Has anyone had any success with this much jump?
This gun is equipped with a factory boss so is it possible I can just pick a near max load, seat to spec, and use the boss to do all the tuning rather than go the ocw and seating depth route?

I doubt if you will see BR accuacy with that rifle. You will probably be plenty accurate, to hunt with. Look at Weatherby rifles, they have so much freebore, you usually can't get near the lands. Matt

My 300WM with Berger 215Hybrids jumps .69" when mag loaded. I see no difference in groups as compared to my stabdard 230OTM load which jumps .20". Rifle/shooter combo shoot in the .4s when they have their head out of the 4th point of contact.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard 7mm mag. Shoots 160 NPs phenomenally well. Hunting rifle only but at 100 yards I can pile all my rounds in a 1/2" group. Not 3 shot groups either. It just keeps hitting that dime size group Everytime. The freebore is crazy on it. I'd say .250 with that bullet. No it's not a competition rifle but it's a very accurate rifle. Not sure about Berger's as all mine have liked being up close to the rifling.

I have a 1903 that I use in Vintage Sniper matches that shoots well enough to win several matches. The load is H4831sc with a 175 Berger VLD jumping .175.

My Rem 700 Varmint, 223, has a lot of free bore as does a lot of Remington's. With my preferred bullet, the Nolser 55 BT, the max COL is 2.340. I'm using 2.285 in my reloads, that's a .055 jump yet this rifle / load combo is one of the most accurate I have, grouping in the 1/2 moa range even with 3,801 round through it.

My Browning X Bolt, 223, is even more extreme with a max COL of 2.440 with this bullet yet at a seating depth of 2.285 it shoot terrific with groups also in the 1/2 moa range.

Many years ago Sierra wrote an article about this topic and stated that some rifle shoot better with a "jump" than close to the lands.

My standard is to start load develop at .020 from the lands provide the cartridge will fit the magazine and there is sufficient bullet depth in the neck to provide adequate alignment and neck tension (I like one bullet diameter inside the neck). I never go inside .010 from the lands to allow for variations in bullet ogive since I do not want to jam or even touch the lands so as to avoid excessive pressure or a stuck bullet in the rifling).

I thought my .071 jump was big, in my 6mm Rem.
You could measure yours with a ruler.
You just don't know until you test it.

I have a Howa/Bartlein barreled 25 06 hunting rifle that shoots the 115 vld's at .120 off. I tested multiple powders and powder charges and never could get it much under 1 moa until I tested the extreme jump. It was night and day when I found the spot. It consistently shoots 1/2 moa 3 shot groups out to 300 and has taken a few nice blacktails!

Yes Berger recommends starting around 10 thou off and testing all the way out to 120 thou jump. I’m forced to start at 240 thou.

I’ve jumped bullets (not Bergers but it doesn’t matter) about .130 that shot well. I didn’t try further back, but they also shot well at .020. I sometimes wonder if they’d have shot well at .240”.

My experience is that Hornady's Amax (ELD) line of bullets favors extreme jump so .240 isn't out of there comfort zone.

Use the BOSS as it was designed to be used and see what happens. They are ugly and obnoxious but they do work.

Not Berger's but 130 TTSX in my 300winmag hunting rifle jump 0.220" and is the most accurate load in that rifle.

Ya that was my plan but the only thing I was concerned with at that amount of jump was a possible alignment issue and no amount of tuning would be able to fix that.

Up until now I have been shooting the Barnes XBT 165s in this gun and they were ok. The only reason I’m switching to the Berger’s is they are half the price and “should” fly better at longer range. I’m trying to stretch this gun out to be reliable at 500 yds
