Extraction problems 6/284

As long as I had this bbl I had extraction problem. Were my loads to hot, improper sizing or fire forming ? I took the rifle to a different gunsmith he inserted a "Go no go chamber guage" Bolt wouldn't close on chamber . New gunsmith said "Former gunsmith didn't run the chamber reamer in far enough ! " I'd load and shoot light loads for a while ,put rifle away and shoot some thing else for a while . Then pick this rifle up and have same problem ! . Anyway had the bad chamber job done two years ago,he also missed the timing on the muzzle brake " Gun wrecker charged me big bucks for chamber job . Should I call him up and ask for refund ? He isn't a professional gunsmith ,only does it on side for his friends. He was recommended to me by one of his friends. I don't want this guy touching my guns again.

You should be able to run the reamer in by hand to correct the head space. If you know how, you can bump your shoulders back a little to get the headspace in spec for your brass.

Send a couple of fired cases two that fit and two that don't and your sizing die to Nate he can fix the dies where you can bump the shoulder.
Better yet send him your gun . Larry

The chamber can be corrected as Butch pointed out. On 284's there are two common reamers floating about. One is for Lapua and Norma brass. The other is for Winchester. If you have a Winchster type chamber and Lapua or Norma brass, I've been told you will have extraction problems.

That's like opening a can of worms. My Manson 6.5 x 284, marked 9/06 and Winchester, accepts Lapua and Nosler brass without any problems. You cannot force a new Hornady 6.5 x 284 in to it. It still will not chamber after running it through a FL sizing die marked "Norma". My 6mm x 284 Winchester (marked 6/08)will accept any of the three, no questions asked (after necking down, of course). The 6.5 I had made to a dummy round so it'd be set-up for VLDs. The 6mm was bought off Mansons' shelf. Measuring fired case heads on both shows .4985"-.499" diameter at the head measured with analog Starrett mics. Diagnosing problems such as this over the web is nothing more than a guess.

That IS a true statement. Your present smith can fix you up no doubt. In my opinion, I would leave the first builder alone and consider it a lesson learned.

Yes, two different reamers for the 6.5 x 284. The different in case body dimentions is miniscule when new cases are used. The main difference is in the throat of the 6.5 x 284. But, the OPs problem with a 6mm x 284, so who knows. This problem deserves hands/eyes on ,,,,,,, anything else if just speculation. If this chamber is properly headspaced and not "rougher than cob", primary extraction would deserve a look see. s p e c u l a t i o n

Why not give the original guy a chance to correct his mistakes? I know yall never make any but id bet that original guy would fix it if he only knew.

It is fairly likely that the reamer was too small for your cases as discussed in several posts. As to the headspace, it is also fairly likely that the guy that fitted your barrel headspaced it to a case instead of a go gauge which is common practice on wildcats. If your die is capable of pushing the shoulder back enough that cases chamber easily, it is a non issue.

What's important is that the smith and the customer understand each other. If you didn't bring it to his attention that you were having a problem then you will never know if he would have made it right.

Some of the best smiths in the country work from small shops and never advertise. Some of the big names charge a lot of money for average quality work.

Rifle is fixed . Current gunsmith reamed the chamber out with what he called a hunting rifle reamer ,"No neck turning" He said with existing brass sized for use in previous chamber . Load moderate charge and seat bullets to jam into rifling lands in order to fire form brass to new chamber. So loaded 46.2 grs of H4350 behind Hornady 105gr HPBT .Zero extraction problems ,was able to hit most of full soda pop cans at 430 yards in NV desert today.
