Extending freebore, throating reamer???

jeez I never asked how to do it I'm pretty sure I got that,I asked how you CHECK for a predetermined depth, theres a pretty large difference from a 1* 30" touch to .243+ freebore dia.. Its not about where you start but where you finish,,,Alex your pretty close to getting a correct measurement but the bullet "kiss" measurement isn't really getting you there....

Well I gave it a couple of days and seems no ideas, so heres a hint, touching off and spinning adjustment and then locking a locknut on a loose thread on uni throater isn't really getting you there. you have no way to check or verify where are you ending. can you repeat on other barrels resetting the tool , doubtful. so heres what I made plug is .2430 ground concentric and square to rod, rods are cheap enough for whatever caliber you wish or need, the caveat is you need to recalibrate when you change rods. not a big deal with the right tools. now you can check all throats all lengths even the reamers with throats already ground that are not right more times than you think....so you can use a comparator which I only know one gunsmith that has one or use this....just measure from back of tenon and do the math, chamber length+ length of 45*at end of chamber + freebore length you want and direct read off mic. I did this as a plug originally but it was a pain getting i.d shoulder and face parallel...

Just seeing this... Geo, I wasnt telling you how to do it or even replying to your question really. Just kind of putting it out there how I do it. My only use for a throating tool is to throat to a customers dummy. And using that dummy as a gauge is the best way to make that happen. What the exact number freebore that ends up is of little concern to me. All of the common stuff gets ordered with the right freebore on the reamer. I prefer to have it on the reamer if I can. Your depth gauge is a very good idea, and would come in real handy for duplicating a freebore. I like it.
