Extending freebore, throating reamer???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
If you were going to buy a throating reamer to extend the freebore of a cartridge, who would you buy it from, PTG or JGS?????

Any others i should be looking at???

Phil.

I rent them from 4D Reamers (www.4dreamers.com). I have used several chamber, throating and forcing cone reamers from Fred and they are always sharp and in excellent shape. Price is around $30 for a 7-day rental from the day you receive them until you ship them back to him. Great guy and has videos to demonstrate proper usage as well.

Phil, in order for the throater to go in perfectly straight and not cut off center, you will also THE proper fitting bushing, they come in sets and individually.

While I like JGS reamers the most, I do like the design of the PTG throater better. It has a stop on it to make throating a specific amount easier. I have JGS throaters and they are excellent but you cant use by hand and they have no stop or way to set them, they are just a reamer with a bushing.

You have to order a UNI throater for the collar. You have to say UNI, lol.

these are before the uni throater were even around.....when Dave worked by himself 7 days a week. it seems the uni throater is just another gadget for people that can't make gadgets

Cant or dont have time? I have some tapered bushings I use with my JGS throaters, but the uni throater from ptg is always in stock and does the job. Making tools and gadgets used to be fun. Now its work lol.

It's still fun. But hard to justify.

yeah its all work after 47 years in a shop but pay his shop rate to him or your own, theres not much I can't make in way less time in shop costs then are charged by others ...

I agree with what your saying but in this case my uni-throaters come with a stop and are still cheaper than others that dont. Not to say cheaper is better, but so far my uni throaters have been in spec.

I have not used one of daves but I have heard good things about Nate Lambeths but I guess that's where they came from originally.....

The uni throater just has a threaded shank with 2 small nuts and a sleeve that stops against the shoulder of the chamber. Basic, but it serves the purpose. I have never seen Nat's in person but I believe it is a much nicer and more accurately adjustable tool.

I've got Nat's reamer stop. You have to make an adapter to use the throating reamer but it then gives you a .001" scale.

Like any other process you have to figure out where to start the measure. Throat reaming is very sensitive. Not for beginners. But he reamer stop allows you to dial in exactly depth you want and it is very accurate. Highly recommended. --Jerry

For the uni-throater I will adjust the stop until I can feel the tool just stating to touch the lands. I turn the tool by hand to feel for this, its very obvious when the cutting edge just starts to kiss the rifling. Take a measurement from the back of the tool to the stop. Move the stop for the amount you want to cut. I use a dummy round like a HS gage. Seat the bullet where you want it and insert it in the chamber. With the bullet against the lands the case will stick out. If the HS number is .950" for example and the dummy sticks out 1" you need to throat .050".
