Exploding crows

Try 220 swift and sparrows. Dad used to shoot them when I was a kid. Maybe 1 or 2 feathers float down with a center hit. Doug
How I do it. Out the window, in my yard high up in the trees, from my tv chair.
Last two years counts 55 and 57. This year only 14. They just don’t come
round as much anymore, heh heh.
In a neighborhood so use a .17 Mach 2. Puts holes in em fifty cent piece sized.

Shot one with a 222 50 grain blitz and it was a pile of tomato and feather stew.
Until I was in my late 20's it was the only one that didn't step out before I squeezed. Then I finally got that one and it became easier. I hunted them over a caller with a shotgun in NY near Auburn/Cortland. Two cities that were inundated with roosts in the city for years. We would catch them coming and going.

Seems like all I have to do is look at them as I drive by and they fly.
I used to shoot several a year out of my kitchen window with my .22 Hornet. They caught on after a few years, rarely see any on my ground anymore. The last few I took were on neighbors' ground with my .25 air rifle.

My two hunting buddies that I grew up with used to hunt them with shotguns using a cassette player and speaker.
I also had a Remington 700 ADL in .222 that was my walking rifle.
I would stroll through our hunting woods shooting a couple squirrels for dinner with that rifle.
My favorite load was Speer 52gr hps over 4198.
Crows didn’t stand a chance out to 150 yards.
My new place here in Kentucky doesn’t have any crows, or they know I have a little CZ rifle in 17hmr waiting beside the door.
I also had a Remington 700 ADL in .222 that was my walking rifle.

Carrion Crows are shot in England under General License , where certain conditions have to be met , to protect crops , livestock from direct attack and protect endangered wildlife . I shoot them under the last two conditions.
This one was taken at 190 yards with the 22-250 T3 , 50 grain V-max departing at 3506 fps . Not the fastest but unzipped this one nicely .

Only one time did i achieve this literally.
.I was on a coyote stand when a unsuspecting player lit on a fence post a couple hundred yds from our hide.Upon impact my buddy says shoot again you missed by a mile,i settled the Swift back on the fence post i could still see a cloud of feathers in the air.He got the coyote i got to see something rare for me anyways.We walked down the hill to have a look never could see or find any body parts just black feathers everywhere.He looked at me and said wish i would of saw the crow.To this day thirtyish years later we still have conversation about said outing, of course with smiles on our faces.It was a win win for me, i got witness black rain in the form of feathers,he got to pack the coyote back to the truck.

I grew up on a ranch, we were taught early that crows get shot and we shot a lot of them. I don’t get nearly as many opportunities now days. I shot one not long ago with a Tikka 223 and a Sierra 65gr SBT, surpressed. Probably the most unimpressive crow kill I’ve ever had. He fell over, no visible damage. Still put a smile on my face.
Nice shooting you guys. Keep after em. “If you build it they will come” i live on a farm. Garden robbers. I love my 20-222 w 32gr vmax and 4198. But the 6’s w 60gr sierra hp and 70gr sierra BK’s is a detonator! Also for the 20cal guys. The 39gr sierra BK is absolutely awesome for explosions and so is the cheap speer 39gr tnt.
Lots of good memories from a lot you guys growing up. I did the same as well. Nice to think about old times while the weather has been nasty out lately here. My father gave me a Remington 788 222 when i was a young kid. Imr4198 and my loading scale was stuck on 20grs for a long time growing up. 50gr spsx. The combo and rifle that made me.
