Ever feel disconnected with other shooters ?

I think many of us have become so specialized in our shooting pursuits we have isolated ourselves. I used to hunt, I used to shoot shotguns, I used shoot pistols. But today all I am interested in is trying to shoot the smallest groups I can at 600 yds CF and 100 yds RF, off a bench. The further you go down the “precision” rabbit hole, the less you have in common people who just like to shoot.

You say that now, but when SHTF, you'll be glad you're "Family". Bwahahaha! :D
I've thought about that quite a bit and in a TRUE SHTF event I can only hope I'm at ground zero of the first nuke or whatever it is and never knew what happened.

I've seen plenty of suffering and misery in my life. I am not even a little bit eager to see any more. People will likely behave worse than animals and I don't want to be around.

Roger that brother!

Last weekend I need a trigger fix so I rolled up 123's to load test for the hell of it in 28 mph winds but it was only at 100yds. Guy at the club was actually doing some testing at the bench. Set up my E Target and shared it with him. He was impressed. Told him it was refreshing to see another reloader who actually was doing the right things for the right reasons. Otherwise it all off the bench top guys that may not even have a zero.

I'm generally comfortable around shooters----just about any kind.

My main disconnections are with so many people who are not shooters
and who know nothing about shooting and and some cases, just don't
like shooting.

Running into such people ranks up there like finding a rat turd in a biscuit.

Please put me in front of a shooter-----we'll get along well.

Disconnected, ha! This is why I joined this forum, i get to not see all your lovely faces every morning! Though i do get to read and hear about the latest trends, techniques, tools, and shop clean outs.

Locally we have 'stages' of shooters. Initially there are those who bought a gun, fired it 10-15 times and it's in the sock drawer. I always invite those friends when I go to the range, once in a blue moon they accept and it's a fun day, but often new terms are introduced to them such as cleaning, stove-pipe, and mis-feed.

Level up to regular 'trigger pullers ' and heres a large portion of the range. Some of my favorite conversations are with well experienced shooters who don't reload. You can spot them when, they know someone will pick up their brass, so they offer it up first and or make a nice neat pile keeping the range tidy and helping that next guy. Most often it's an investment of learning / finances / space that they're not ready to leap into. They're the ones who are amazed at what fine tuning a hand load can mean for accuracy in an off the shelf firearm, too. I really enjoy shooting with those who are going their skills. Sometimes i wonder, how much of my results are from my reloading vs. skills.

We have fewer cost savers here. Not sure why; the 2000 cast bullets an hour guys, with powder coat; or the 15,000 rounds loaded over the winter for $0.02. mostly they're not at the range as much.

Finally, there's the 'us' crowd. Want to learn more, want to get better, want to justify that 1962 National Match 30-06 brass cause it's as good as anything new, or those who know the dimensions .2430, .2435, .2437; or well; pick any thread here.

Over the years I've met up with some of my long time shooting buddies, we do often note that how nice it is to have someone to talk to about shooting; but perhaps that's cause we're on the same level?
Best part is, i can take you all to the range with me; and no-one says anything if i make a bad wind call and don't say something first.
Like all forums, we do have our moments; I've seen a few threads that make me wonder; perhaps I should try that new chronograph app for my phone. Though, for the most part; I'm always interested to read the latest what's what and the trials and tribulations of what difference does each part of the process make.

Well, I'll sign off now, i hope you all enjoy being disconnected; catch you all at the range soon enough.

I just nod and listen to shooters that do not really understand precision shooting but they don't know that they don't know.
They will get bent outta shape if you don't take them as serious shooters. They busy talk of calibers and numbers.. sd, Es
All kinds of information. "I'm smart" stuff.
I could swell all up and start trying to impress them but that is meaningless.

I had a guy do that to me at a match and i broke that possible friendship with a hard comeback to him.

I'm a minimalist, i do what i was taught and my targets say it works kinda well.
I have learned to stay to myself except for the laughs and idle chat.

If like to try f class to see if that game surpasses BR score in ability the way so many fclasss shooters think.

Being an F Class shooter and having a friends introduce you to new “gun friends that target shoot” only to find out they shoot paper plates at 25 and 50 yards with an AR15 off the bench and then call that Benchrest shooting..
That kind of stuff has always been I think you just get to a point in you life where you experience it.

If I try and compete I get so effing bored I should just shoot myself, I just can't stand it. Give me something that moves or shoots back and I fair ok. It's different strokes for different folks.

There are a lot of trails in the shooting sports. That is a good thing. Interests change.

If you are a golfer you golf or quit.

Shooting sports have shotgun, pistol, target rifle, action shooting that involves everything. Just make sure we stick together!!

People can and will be awful, you just can't avoid it! I'm just grateful for the family and time that I've had.

I'm with you there. I've used the range as a training area for my son, taught him and now my grandchildren how to be organized, analytical and to be decent folks while teaching them to shoot.

I use it to keep up with the manual of arms for my tools, work loads and dabble with old military rifles. It's fun taking a 100 year old rifle and make it work.

As long as shooters are safe let them have their fun.

One of my son's used my father's Pre64 Model 70
in 270 to harvest a buck a few weeks ago. Old Redfield wide angle scope still on it. My son said it was a fantastic experience. Sitting on the mountain imagining where every honest scratch and dent on the stock got there...

Buck didn't know it was done in by a antique rifle!!

Here's one...

Going to the indoor pistol range and running the target out to 25 yards to start when everyone else is at 7 yards or closer.

I find that it takes a certain mindset and willingness to take this stuff on... just like tying your own flies, fixing your own cars, or working on your own house. Many a man under 35 never learned or had a father figure who valued this kind of thing. Money was the fastest (and possibly only) way to get it done right.

A few of use tried to get access to a 600yd range in a nearby county that was set up for service rifle and high power. i talked to the guy that was friends with the owner and was the match director. I told him that we had never shot a match but had developed loads for several rifles each and were looking to shot at a further distance than the local range offered. He says "No we don't allow no plinkers to use our range." As we talked he asked what calibers I shot. I knew he meant chamberings and i replied 'I was currently working up a load for a 6.5-284." He says what's that? it was the rage back then in high power his chosen thing but had no clue.

Disconnected. Yup. Still...

I've been wanting a certain scope for a while. I mustered the resources and shopped around on line. One thing I don't like is buying things, especially optics, sight unseen. Oh hey, the nearby big-name sporting and outdoors store has one in stock!

I haven't been in there is at least a couple of years even though it's 2 minutes from home because of exactly what I'm about to describe.

First, I parked far way away from the door and hiked in with my cane in the sleet/rain/snow because of all their special parking spaces reserved. Expectant mothers, curbside pickup, disabled veterans, active duty military, ride sharing, people with dogs...I DO have a handicap parking placard but I never use it because I can get there. A few more steps won't kill me and those spaces are intended to accommodate wheelchairs etc.

As soon as I clear the door there's three “associates” at a table asking me if I'm a club member and would I like to become one. Thank you, no.

As I approach the gun counter there's a sign that says something like “To better serve our blah blah...please sign in by scanning this QR code” well my phone is in my car and besides I don't even think it has a QR code reader.

This place hires old apparently retired guys to work the counter. I see no customers but two old guys behind the counter talking. As I approach they turn and walk into the back. OK. I go down to where the optics are. I look in the display case and do not see the model I'm after. Hey there's another old guy “associate” who I'm sure will help me, except he continues to stare into space. So, I begin looking at the scope boxes stocked behind the counter. Can't see too well, they're below the back counter top. After waiting, obviously looking for something, I finally walk over to this guy who can no longer ignore me and he, without making any eye contact, turns and walks into the back. WTF.

So I went home with my 3800 bucks still in my pocket.

Disconnected? Well, I feel this is not the way retail businesses should operate but there it is.

(Rant mode off)
