Unless an ANSI/ASTM certified laboratory tests this product and backs up the claims with an in depth analysis, it's just another snake oil product. Many of my barrels are match grade and hand lapped; there's no way I would put something the barrel maker doesn't recommend in my bore.

You all may laugh,

But I can tell you that there has been some gov. sponsored research done with ceramic barrels and the initial results are amazing. There is a marked reduction in barrel temp rise, and they indicate, if it ever gets perfected) that a barrel will last longer than you can imagine.

I know nothing of the product pointed to here, but they may be
on the right track. I do have reservations about the molecular bonding with steel.

Easy to throw out numbers like "800% increase", but until/unless I see some independent test results, by someone who has no vested interests in the "product", I'll ignore these off-the-wall claims. My bottom line is: "show me".

Good point Alan, but I think there's a world of difference between a ceramic barrel and some goop in a tube you squirt in the bore. And the claims, well they are grandiose to say the least:

New Nano Ceramic micro-composite... atomic-sized particled embed in the metal surface and form a ceramic metal fusion composite... Properly applied it can prolong the borelife of a barrel virtually indefinitely.

... Allows the bullet to glide down the barrel on an atoms-thin liner that protects the metal from actual contact with the bullet.

New barrel muzzle velocity increases up to 10% depending on barrel length. Used barrel muzzle velocity increase is up to 33%. Accuracy increase by 80%! Accuracy won't degrade over time.

You're right about that guys. The company that manufactures the "airborne" cold remedy tablets just settled a lawsuit with the FTC. They too made claims that proved to be false. It cost them $30 million.

A few years back in Precision Shooting magazine, they ran a wear test of a metal treatment using two barrels chambered in Ackleys "earschplittenloudenboomer" otherwise known as the 22-378 Weatherby wildcat. The treated barrel wore much, much better than the untreated barrel. Unfortunately I haven't heard anything further about the process,used in the oil drilling industry to increase tooling life according to the article) or any further testing in regards to accuracy. But it did seem that it would likely triple barrel life.

Ceramic barrels. They've been doing some small arms testing over at Eglin AFB for several years trying to make ceramic barrels work. While they can make a ceramic barrel, and a ceramic barrel will hold up to unbelievable abuse,in an M-60 barrel, think many many boxes of ammo linked together fired continuously without blowing up). But due to the difficulty,impossibility at this point) of producing a precision bore and rifling it isn't especially accurate, even for a fully automatic weapon.

And so far the ceramic barrels aren't exactly "stand alone" in that they need support by sleeving or wrapping due to ceramics being inherently brittle. Differential expansion and thermal transfer coefficients leads to some difficulty in sleeving/wrapping too.

I believe that you are talking about Jtex. It really hasn't proven out.
A true ceramic does not come in a tube to be applied as noted in the adv.
I'm not against trying things. I have a Kreiger barrel that I had melonite treated on the suggestion of Joel Kendrick. He is one of our best long range shooters. The barrel has been incredible and has over 3000 rounds on it. Alot for a PPC barrel. 2 others that I have done are so so shooters. They are showing no throat wear though.

Which company did you use for the melonite coating?

I was fortunate enough to have Joel run them through his company's treatment division. He did it on his own at nights or over the weekend.

I am happy with the longer barrel life. I don't know what it would cost as mine was done as a favor. Do a search on melonite and email some of the companies.
