ES question

Yes, it was a small sample, 5 for the 223 and 6 for the 308. Good info to know on Gunny.

Now I need to find some space to stretch these puppies out a little.

ES only tells you the difference in velocity between your fastest and slowest shots, nothing else. No amount of hocus pocus can get ES to tell you anything more.

You are correct regarding load development. However, ES will give you a good measurement of your load consistency (IE - skills). ES will go down as the consistency of the cartridge load gets better.

I use ES to tell me how I'm doing with my loading techniques. Obviously your SD will also be impacted in a positive way with lower ES as well.

Ok, I ran the numbers for the SD

223 = 22.7
308 = 13.4

Good ? Bad ?
Not bad at all, I was told a SD of <10 was very good. Regards JCS

One way to reduce your SD is to have a lower ES. Now over a larger sample, you SHOULD lower your SD as well (assuming you have any skill at all with respect to loading) - so there is another factor to lower SD. Taken together, ES and SD should give you a good sense about how consistent your loading techniques are as well as the proability that those rounds can produce smaller groupings.
