Elmer Keith

I have read some of these old time gun writers and enjoyed it, but one book/ writer that does not get mentioned is John Nosler. I thought “Going Balistic” was really interesting, as are most of his cartrige descriptions in manuals and articles he has written. He was once on a guided hunt amd a horse pissed him off so bad he bought it from the guide so he could shoot it amd use it as bear bait, lots of great stories

The names Askins, Keith, Jordan, Keith, Skelton and O'Connor take me back to my beginnings of this almost life-long affair with all things shooting, hunting and reloading. All these men evoke strong memories of strong men with strong convictions and steadfast ways. I have long lived by a code derived from the writings/teachings of Colonel Cooper and have walked the hallowed ground of Gunsite. His knowledge of history a plan for the battle at hand and his defensive tactics have seen me through a tight spot or two.
Who will we remember from the current crop of "experts"?
That thought just saddens me because it will more likely be the worst than the best.
You just wrote my exact reply, and life.
Visited Elmer at his Salmon, Idaho home. My favorite gun memory.
Hold the very last Orange Gunsite Expert Certificate personally signed by Cooper. Second favorite.

I met Colonel Cooper at the 1999 SHOT Show. He was old and I could tell tired. I asked him to autograph a copy of the Steyr brochure detailing the (then new) Steyr Scout Rifle.
It was as if he caught a second wind as he signed it and told me a couple of stories.
He passed a little over a year later.

I went over to his house with Bob Hagel when Elmer lived in Idaho. He had a big cigar and a glass of whiskey and enjoyed talking with us.
Yes, I remember that well also...He always used to hang out at the post office in Salmon, just to visit with people as they came to check their mail....Never was without that big old cigar!!

I have OGEK Elmer Keith's armourers stock cartouche on either a garand or a o3a3 I have.i would have to get them out to see which one.pretty sure it's the Springfield garand.pretty cool

I was told by "Buck' Buckner, who knew Jack O'Conner and wrote a book about him, that he killed more game with an '06 than a 270. He had 2 Model 70s, that looked similar, one an '06, the other a 270, both built by Spokane, WA gunsmith, Al Bisen. He had taught English at the college level in Arizona. Both O'Conner and Keith produced a lot of good reading, and knowledge.

My favorite Keith sixgun. Which is yours?

Hi LAH...I am new to this site, so I am still learning how to navigate...I am looking for someone who can help me determine the value of several Elmer Keith items that I have. Can you help me?

Who was that other guy besides Skelton that wrote for Shooting Times that did the reloading for Varmint rifles? Seemed a little younger, maybe Rick something.
Rick Jamison I believe. Rick, to my understanding, had filed suit against Winchester over "ownership" of the WSM design. Not sure he resigned of was removed from the ST editorial staff.
I always thought Rick's true talent as a writer was to make all the technical side of shooting interesting at the same time. It could be very tedious and often boring reading some of the writers who wanted to show us their high IQ with "waves and equations".

Yes that’s him. Very entertaining reading for a young man back then.
