Eliseo tube gun as varminter?

I've picked up a couple of 60's mfr Rem 700 SA .473 bolt face guns this week and have a hankering to mess with them. I don't compete, just like to screw around with informal range work and 500 yard varminting.

So I'm looking at maybe a 6mm br set up as a single shot, maybe run a 10 twist for the 88 grain bergers and 70 grain SBK's. I'd set it up with the ejector removed (how I run all my guns) and some kind of single shot tray in the mag well.
Add a jewell trigger and shilen select match bbl.
I'd often be shooting off a swiveling varmint bench, either bipod or stoney point "x" bag.

Anyone used the Eliseo to build a varmint gun?

He makes a hunting version that is a bit lighter but maybe you wouldn't need that. They are very ergonomic once set up. At $1000 they are a bit up there compared to other varmint-appropriate stocks but are awfully cool! I shoot NRA Long Range and the good shots shooting the tube guns do extremely well at 1000 yds..

The R1 is a single-shot, short action and the R5 is a magazine-fed, short action. The R5 has an Eliseo magazine that feeds 6BR perfectly. Either one would be a good choice. Gary also makes front and rear bag riders that might be useful. I use the riders on my RTM when doing load development and they work well.

A lot of guys use AR's for varminting, and the tube gun has the same basic ergonomics with the exception of a bolt handle and adjustable stock. If you like the way an AR feels and can shoot one accurately, than the transition shouldn't be that bad. I don't really think it matters if it's been done before, it only matters if you can effectively adapt to the ergonomics as they are a bit different from a standard stock.
When I bought an AR-10 the vertical grip hanging below the rifle took a lot of getting used to for me. The rifle shot well, it just didn't feel the same.

I doubt the tube gun itself will have any issues in almost any manner in which it is used. They are very adaptable and can be adjusted in a number of ways and have attachments like the bag rider to suit certain situations.

Basically, if you can adapt to using the tube gun in the manner intended, I see no reason why it can't be adapted and perform well itself.

I watched a guy use one for 600yd F-Class at the last match I went to, and he seemed just fine with it and at no disadvantage.

Thanks for the replies. Peeps to you use the bag riders mentioned above?

I have one in R5 config. I am very happy with it. I mainly use it for shooting PD. I know eventualy I will shoot matches with it but for now it is a very looking paper puncher and PD shooter.

The RTM and RTS use AI mags. My RTM uses .308 mags with the short lower and .300 Win mags with the long lower for .284. Both work well.

The R5 uses Eliseo mags for either the 6BR-6 Dasher types or, a new introduction, .223.

Eh, my tube-gun plans have hit a backburner with the purchase of the Dakota Predator 6br listed here this week. $$$$$$ and have to sell some toys to plump the savings acct back up.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to sock away one of those Rem 700 short actions for the build - some day.
