Ejector or not?

Looking at building a 20 practical in a Savage action to go along side my AR rig. I run a brass catcher on my AR to save my brass will probably only use this on pd & mountain gophers.

So my question do you recommend or run a ejector or not?

FWIW, I hate ejectors on my varmint or bench rifles; they are all single shot bolt guns. After I have sorted & prepped premium brass, the last thing I want to happen is have a piece go flying into the dirt or onto a concrete floor. Other shooters have other needs, but for me ejectors are a bad thing. I have several Dakota Varminter rifles for PD's & paper punching, and the 1st thing I do with each one I buy is to send the bolt assembly to Greg Tannel to have the firing pin bushed and the ejector removed & filled.

I hate having to pull brass out of the action with my fingers. When i get in a hurry and my fat fingers fail me i might miss a good condition or follow up shot. I run ejectors in everything however i usually trim the spring a little at a time or replace it with a finer wire spring so it just lays the brass out of the port onto the bench.

I also just change the ejector spring (Remingtons) to the strength to eject the brass as I want it. Easy to do, and I have a lifetime supply of spring wire now.

With the 20 Practical being just like the .223, (except for smaller caliber) ejection shouldn't be a problem. Trim the ejector spring till the brass falls where you want it. Anything shorter than the .223 can have ejection problems so single shots can be your friend. All my Savage rigs are set up as single shots and I don't have any problems picking brass off the bolt head. And I don't end up chasing brass either.;)

And if you're shooting single shots, you'll end up being more accurate. No quick follow up. So every shot should count.:D

I prefer single feed with no ejector. It helps me to slow down and take more precision shots plus I don’t have to hunt for my brass. It’s amazing how well a piece of brass can hide from me on the ground!

I pick em with the rb-lp no eject ppc's. Ejector springs are real easy to lighten up, that is what i did with the 2 port Borden and the brass just pours out the port onto a soft landing staying on the bench,,,,

A plunger ejector pushes against the case head after being chambered and produces torque. If you jump bullets, the bullet can be off center if case is sized excessively. A jammed bullet, less so. I buy actions without ejectors or remove them from Rem 700s. I got tired of losing brass in varmint fields.

Kelbly TG ejector. Won't eject the brass if you don't pull the bolt all the way back (so you can pull the brass manually), works flawlessly when you do want to eject cases, and doesn't put pressure on the case head when the bolt is in battery (nice for setting up dies by "feel", and doesn't push brass off center).

i be dadgum--neat!

Agreed, no ejector for bench gun used on p-dogs. I hate searching for brass. No trouble removing fired case from my savage 12 rb/lp or cooper 21.
