Eight this morning

Nice. Reminds me of my childhood in MO. Mom knew hot to cook them up. Back then we had red squirrels and smaller grey squirrels. Looks like they've become mixed. --Jerry

They are all grey squirrels. My brother went also and got seven. there were two red squirrels in his group.

I haven't eaten a squirrel in 40 years. We got a limit every Sat during season, and Dad loved them. Parboiled to tenderize, bread and fry in real lard, gravy from the remnants over mashed potatoes. Delicious but after probably 1000 I lost my taste for them. But I would eat a mess if somebody invited me over.

Latter on in the fall when the leaves get off the trees and after we have a frost or two to kill off the flies that cause wolves in the squirrels I plan to do some hunting with pistols. I just picked up a Super 14" match chambered barrel for my T/C Contender pistol in 22 LR and hope to get a forearm made to fit it and get it scoped. If not I will hunt with my Ruger MKII 22LR target pistol that I shoot exceptionally well. Squirrels seem to be EVERYWHERE this year. I used to about live in the woods when I was a kid in the fall and winter with a shotgun or 22 rifle and shot many squirrels and rabbits and mom would cook them. Squirrels were put into a pressure cooker for a few minutes to tenderize them then removed and rolled in seasoned flower and fried in an iron skillet then mom would make gravy and bake biscuits. Thinking about it makes me hungry.

Our church when I was growing up would have a squirrel mulligan cooking on the 3rd weekend of the season. Those were good times.

Squirrel and rabbit are GREAT in gumbo!

I have to admit I'm envious. I grew up in MO. My dad took me squirrel hunting the first time when I was 4 or 5. I'm sure I had to be a great annoyance in the woods. Started hunting them on my own when I lived on a farm when I was 8. To me there is no better hunting and practice for deer than squirrels. I really miss that type hunting (only pine squirrels where I live now).

Are they the "Quiet" .22s? I use them for squirrels and blackbirds. Amazing killing power at 700 plus fps.
Edit: I just checked. The Quiets are solid 40s.
No they are not the ones marketed as "Quiet" they are just sub sonic, 1050 fps I believe. But they are much quieter than standard velocity.

A tasty recipe for squirrel/rabbits includes salt, black pepper, onion powder, brown mustard (cajun is best), eggs, PANKO bread crumbs (finely crushed saltine crackers will work), flour, butter or olive oil. A cast-iron skillet produces the best results.
