effects of using a trued action without proper fit std dia barrel shank

I am seeing acquaintances buy or have Remington actions trued including threads and using pre fit barrels they buy from a different source with std thread dimensions. There would be a difference of .010-.017 under size tenon dia with corresponding sloppy barrel thread fit.

What would be your best guess of using such a sloppy lock up. Many of these guys are going to use the rigs as long range rifles.

I am creating this thread as a means of educating.

Thanks for your input

No answer to your Q AMII but I know if I missed a pitch dia by .005, it seemed like, and I know I couldn't, that I could drop the male through the female w very little wiggle effort.

Some of the very best gunsmiths in the World are on this site, regularly. Hoping that they would shed some light, what ever that maybe.

Keith, as you know, you can calculate how much contact area the thread will have vertically but .017 is a lot of difference on a thread of typical tenon pitch diameters, IMO. Also, IMO it doesn't take much area to work just fine UNTIL something goes wrong. Then, I want it all. Years ago I spoke with someone at H.P. White, where they do lots of proof testing, etc. It surprised me when he said that the pressure barrel would literally get spit out of the receiver/fixture with enough pressure. Think about that...The fixture had to open up under pressure for that to happen and one would think that the barrel had to open at the same time, which makes it hard to imagine how the receiver could spit the barrel out. Interesting stuff though, nonetheless.

Well, the thread is nothing more than something to hold the barrel in the action, it doesn't square anything up, the shoulders do that. You still have more than half the thread holding the barrel in the action and since it is self centering it will be in the middle of the action. Thread engagement would move from .054 to .047 per side roughly. So, probably going to be OK if loads are held to something normal. All that being said, I don't do this and I don't recommend anyone else doing this.

Are the trued threads actually oversize or are we assuming? Some call running a threading mandrel using bushings "truing threads" mandrels can be purchased as standard size, just saying.

It works out to roughly 1.5 sq. inches of steel in shear holding the barrel on. That's a lot more than what you have on the bolt lugs.

I had this happen on a 788 I re-barreled. The threads were a bit loose but it torqued down tight. After about the 5th shot the barrel came off and stuck between the scope objective and the stock. No harm and the last bullet went out the barrel and moved the group from .75 inch to 1.25 inch. We figured the right hand twist unscrewed the barrel.o_O

go to your local farm store and buy a 1 1/4" grade 8 nut and bolt
check out the clearance between the two, then look up the shear strength
bet you will be amazed at the strength of that joint
to respond to the op's question, depends on how much matreial [if any] was removed in the truing process
