Effect of case lube on powder charging on progressive press ?

Not asking about detrimental effects that case lube might have on the powder igniting or its burn rate…

But on the inconsistency of the powder charge due to the powder dropping through an inside neck lubed case.

How much does the inside case lube affect the powder charge variation ?

If it's in the case there is no wt. variation???

Try for no lube in the necks other than a dry lube. A little one shot in their never hurt in my experience while spraying the outside of the cases. Take a Q tip wet with isopropyl alcohol and clean the inside of the necks before dropping powder. I do this and also apply NEO Lube #2 inside my necks for my "ultra precision" rounds with a small paint brush from the arts and crafts store

If you ignore the lube possibly contaminating the powder (inhibiting burn), and assume that the entire charge makes it out of the funnel, any sticking granules will be pushed into the case by the bullet when it's seated. So no change in charge weight. Does it actually affect anything? No idea.

Exactly!

I would think that if there's enough lube to cause powder to stick, it has to have some effect as it burns.

If you have enough lube to cause a variation in charge weight, you’re using way too much lube.

Seem like Most/many progressives use a powder funnel that insert into the neck about half way, there should be very little powder sticking to the neck. More will stick by dumping powder back out to check the charge weight than when dropping, so it’s tough to measure.

Using dies that that don’t over size the neck will also help, as will not cleaning the inside of the neck.

Measure weight of 3 kernels of IMR 4350 or large stick powder. Then we will all know.

Google- A single kernel of IMR 4350 powder weighs approximately 0.04187 grains

Using a Qtip to lube inside case necks with Lee lube , bad idea. May cause lots of runout.

I've been hitting the case mouths of my brass at an angle, (two directions @ 180 degrees) with One-Shot. I always let my cases dry thoroughly before sizing, and all seems good. I don't notice any powder stockage when I charge them (non-progressive)

Hornady claims One-Shot won't contaminate powder or primers, and -- I guess I'm trusting them. jd

I suppose you could use a sizing die with a carbide expanding ball, I use them when I can, although I don't load rifle rounds on the Dillon 550 presses we have.
