Edge Stock users.....Tip of the Day

For those of you shooting rifles with the McMillan Edge stock looking to add weight to the built in weight chamber in the butt there are various options available. McMillan makes a weight kit that will add 7 ounces, but is a bit expensive at $83.00. You could always add lead shot and get perhaps 6 ounces, or a lead rod and get perhaps a bit more.

There is another alternative. You can add a pure Tungsten rod .479 in diameter cut to the exact length that you need. Tungsten is one of the heaviest metals available and well suited to the task of adding weight to the Edge stock. How heavy is it? Pure tungsten weighs 19600 Kg/cu.M with only Plutonium being heavier at 19800 Kg/cu.M so in this configuration a pure Tungsten rod .479 in diameter weighs 2.0033388 ounces per inch.

I carefully measured the weight chamber on my Edge stock and came up with a maximum length of 7.188 inches. I contacted Ralph Showalter of Buffalo Tungsten in Depew NY.(Phone: 716-683-9170) and he told me he could supply me a pure tungsten rod .479 X 8.125 with a density of 19.2 grams/CC for $50.00. I asked him if they would cut it to length for me since Tungsten is about as hard as it gets. Forget the skazillon hack saw blades that it would take to put a dent in it! He said yes they would cut it so I ordered a piece cut to my max length of 7.188 inches. I recieved it in the mail today and inserted it into my Edge stock which was by the way a perfect fit. It has added 14.4 ounces to my rifles weight and helps balance the 26 inch Bartlein HV barrel.
I know, fifty bucks sounds like a lot, but when compared to the McMillan weight system for $83.00 it really isn't considering your getting more than twice the weight for less money.

Wish i had read this yesterday. Drilled two 1 1/8 in holes 5.5 in deep in my daughters ST1000 last night and filled with lead shot. No where close in weight to what i could have done with two 1 in. tungston rods that long!!!!

Eddie,

Your welcome! Whenever I discover something like this I pass it along.
I miss seeing Sara and yourself and all the guys I shot score with. Perhaps I'll have to bring my son down to Thurmont sometime this summer.
