dummy request on any 20 cal 222

Small favor to ask.

I'll be having a custom reamer made due to the few that are available, relatively speaking, in a 20 caliber 222Rem.

I see very little difference in terms of performance when comparing the 20Bobcat, 20Duster, 20Extreme, 20-222, etc. I realize there are differences regarding case prep and some require fireforming, these differences are of no consequence on which 222 wildcat I decide on. So any of these will work for my build.

If I could have:

A dummy round with a bullet seated in a once/twice fired case
A dummy round with a bullet seated in a virgin case
A virgin 222
A once fired case with no sizing
A once fired case that has been sized

The more variances of the 222 that I have to provide my reamer manufacturer, the more information they'll have to help facilitate in the build of that reamer.

Chuck, with all due respect, I think you are wayyyyyyyy other thinking this. As I said over on Saubier, call up your favorite reamer company, tell them which 222 brass you plan to neck down and see which reamer they suggest for that brass. The only real difference is in the neck dia. and if you get a 20-222 reamer for Lapua brass you'll be good to go. Then have your gunsmith throat it for whatever bullet/s you plan to shoot.
 
B23, that was a great suggestion, I did indeed call one and with their waits time I called another. Each of them made the suggestion and highly prefer having the cases in their various forms such as the ones I laid out for my desired request.

Since both reamer companies would much prefer to have the dummy round in it's final state (sized, bullet at proper seating depth), I thought I’d see who has some they can spare, so that I can start the reamer order by sending what they request. Each of the reamer companies made the comment that there would be no ambiguities with the dummy round in their hands, they encourage their clients to send in the dummies for custom reamers.

Suppying the 'dummy' round yourself (with the cases you're going to use) is always best. No room for middle-man steps when it comes to a reamer. :eek:

I would highly recommend PTG. They have reamers in their file that will work with whatever components you're going to use. Plus, they spec. many of their reamers for known-dimension, readily available dies. Having a reamer that matches non-custom dies is a huge deal. In the past, we've actually had PTG make reamers to sizing dies dimensions to avoid issues.

Luckily, the 20-222 is a pretty plain vanilla deal. :)

If you're not familiar with ordering reamers, communicate with the 'smith that's doing the actual chambering to get it.

Al, this is very consistent with what the reamer manufacturers are telling me, I will indeed be providing them a dummy round myself. Each of the reamer manufacturers that I spoke with stressed the point that they'd really like have multiple cases to see the different stages of the case's size.

i.e.
A dummy round with a bullet seated in a once/twice fired case
A dummy round with a bullet seated in a virgin case
A virgin 222
A once fired case with no sizing
A once fired case that has been sized

My 'smith is in agreement with this approach.
 
What I've learned by owning one of these rifles, is that this chambering is a very common and not so secret favorite of many guys like us. It's been done for years now, and is pretty close to being a standard reamer for most of the barrel companies.

The long neck of the 222 case allows a generous variance for bullet length and design, and many of us only size half of it. The Jgs reamer that my chamber is cut with allows clearance for Lapua brass to be necked from 22 to 20 without needing to be neck turned. It might seem that this would leave too much expansion on thinner brass, leading to neck cracks but --- no. I'm still using skanky old Winchester and Remington brass that had several firings in my 222 before I converted them to 20. And I've never annealed a case in my life. jd
 
Echoing what others have stated.
This is a fairly common wildcat. I would be extremely surprised if every one of the reamer manufacturers didn’t already have prints for the 20-222. It’s just a .222 Remington necked down to .20 caliber. Not exactly esoteric. Don’t over-complicate your project. Make a call to Manson; they’ll get you taken care of.
 
Bryson at Manson advises they have only the 222 Rem, no wildcats on the 222. I may need to speak with someone else based on the thread feedback.

A nice female answered at JGS, didn't catch her name but she also advised that they have nothing like that in stock and that a custom reamer would be 12-16 weeks.

I'm ok with that time frame due to the other components in a pipeline as well.

They were pretty quick with their response of not having the reamers, so one of two things are happening. They aren't really looking because it's not so common and they're just assuming they don't have it OR they do have it, but I need to speak with someone that truly knows the inventory.
 
I like to show this target, which isn't any great shakes compared to the groups you're able to see on this forum. What it does show, is just how easy this cartridge is able to shoot well with minimal trouble.

These brass are unsorted as to number of firings, weight, lot, etc. Powder is thrown, not weighed, bullets are unknown lot #s, unsorted. Basically, quick and dirty squirrel shooters. Barrel was dirty, and left that way as I shot these groups. You will notice that I slapped out a 12 shot group of different budget bullets in the middle of my actual groups. (and they shot horribly)

There is a five shot group under each of those dimes, with the corresponding measurements, pretty much proving my "sub .5 MOA, all day long" claims. "as long as I do my part".:p

Sub .5 isn't so hot around here, but remember that these loads are "quick and dirty". And they work very well for sub 300 yd squirrel shooting. jd
 
I wonder if you need to talk to someone else at JGS because they had this 20-222 reamer, see attached print, sitting on the shelf ready to ship when I had mine built and that was only a little over a year ago.

This was a quickie load my smith shot when he was test firing it. H322 and 40gr Bergers.

Okay, you're looking for dummy rounds from another gun...got it. ;)
Like several have pointed out, the 20-222 reamers are pretty standard deals....just let them know if you're going to use Lapua cases or not as the neck thickness is different with the Lapua.

If you use the Search feature on this site, there's a lot of info on the 20-222.
