DPMS LR243 (PICS)

Picked up my LR243 this past Wed. and Just thought I would share my first experience with the rifle. The Leupold VX I was thrown in for free along with the rings. I hate the scope due to it not having clicks but it is what it is.
Here are some pics.

Well I got to go out and shoot it today. I tried three different types of bullets. The bullets I used are;

Remington Express Core-Lokt 100 grain $17.99 a box

Federal Premium 85 grain Sierra Gameking BTHP $30.00 a box

Federal Red Box 100 grain Soft Point $13.00 a box

I used these because they were cheap and because the place I got them didnt have much of a selection.

The Remington 100 grain and the Federal 100 grain both shot pretty good and was spacing about .5 to .75 moa.

There was NO problems with feeding and the gun and bullets performed great together.

Then I tried the Federal Premium 85 grain Gameking BTHP. The gun racked the first round out of the magazine and shot right at point of aim. Then the gun would not pick up another round off the magazine. Every time I would clear it and try to rack another one it would hit the feed ramp and never go into the barrel. It was marring up the bullets and in one case it even pushed the bullet back into the casing. I think this was due to the nose of the bullet being somewhat squared compared to the other and the hollow point being possibly softer letting it deform the nose of the bullet.

When I loaded them one by one they shot great. The groups were consistently smaller and stayed around the .5 mark.

It was a miserable day to shoot where I was shooting. No shade whatsoever and the temp over 100 degrees with about 85% humidity and I was laying on a flatbed trailer and felt like a piece of bacon on a frying pan.

My left leg on my bipod worked itself loose and that made it kick further out causing the gun to lean. Then with no warning the clouds moved in and the bottom fell out of the sky. Thunderstorms moved in and that was the end of my day.

Sorry I was not able to get any pics of the groups. I had my targets set up on a large piece of plywood. in between targets we would go measure them and make some notes. My plan was to pull them all down when done but the rain had me running the other way.

Some more pics from early in the shooting session.

Overall I was very happy with the way the gun performed. The trigger will be one of the first new things I order for this gun. The trigger pull was not measured but its way too stout.

I was given this Leupold VX I to sweeten the deal and save me money where I could at least go and shoot the gun and not wait on a scope. Well, I dont know if all of the VX I models are like this one but there were NO clicks present which made adjusting the scope very difficult. When I would go to click it it would just move and not click .....not even the slightest bit. I hated that.

You will have to excuse my funny faces as I was sweating so much my eyes were burning. lol

I have read a lot about this rifle and intend on purchasing one new from rguns.com for $935 in a day or two. Everyone has said to chuck the stock mag and get Magpul mags, and that will alleviate your problems because the Magpul mag holds the round at the proper angle for feeding. Hope this helps.

nice rig. If you do reload and are going after varmints, you might start with the 70gr Nosler or Sierra Blitzking. Those bullets shoot in every 243 (granted that it is only a sample size of 6 or 7) that I've tried.

I will second chucking the stock mag and getting some Magpul mags. I had nothing but issues with my DPMS LR308 feeding properly until I got some better mags, and Magpul's worked well for me.

I have the same model and have been using Hornady 58gr Vmax factory loads and the Winchester combined tech 95 gr ballistic tips with no loading problems. Groups are really good with the Hornady and fair with the Winchester.

I have loaded 70 gr ballistic tips for it with Frontier and PMC brass. The Frontier didn't load well but shot great when it would chamber. The PMC loaded well with no malfunctions. Both loads used IMR 4350 and Fed210 primers. Groups ranged from 3/8" to 3/4".

I'm using the DPMS mags

Hello all,

Just wondering what twist the gun has. My 243 shoots the 87 V-max like a laser beam with some 4831SC under it.

I believe the scope should click when adjusted. Leupold has a lifetime no hassle warranty. Send it to them and it will be fixed for free.

I will bet you will like it a lot more once it's fixed.

nfhjr62, that is a flatbed trailer, but not a fifth wheel. You can see the hitch in one of the pics, and it's not a goose neck for a fifth wheel hitch.

Is that a feature from Leupold? It just doesn't make any sense to me, and I have never seen a scope that doesn't click. Though I have little experience with Leupold hunting optics, it just doesn't seem like a good feature.

Kenny474 I do not like that way of scope adjustment at all but for a hunting scope where you will never adjust your scope it is ok. The marks are in 2moa on my scopes like that so trying to really get a tack driver dialed in is almost as much fun as teaching a cat a trick.

For those who have never tried to teach a cat anything it is almost imposible.

I taught my cat to play fetch, took 3 days but he does it!

Sorry if I was a bonehead on the scope clicks, I just have never seen one that doesn't click. And I have seen a lot of glass through the years, and have a lot of friends with scoped guns.
Oh well, I only said I thought it should click, which would seem right for a scope of that quality.
