Picked up my LR243 this past Wed. and Just thought I would share my first experience with the rifle. The Leupold VX I was thrown in for free along with the rings. I hate the scope due to it not having clicks but it is what it is.
Here are some pics.
Well I got to go out and shoot it today. I tried three different types of bullets. The bullets I used are;
Remington Express Core-Lokt 100 grain $17.99 a box
Federal Premium 85 grain Sierra Gameking BTHP $30.00 a box
Federal Red Box 100 grain Soft Point $13.00 a box
I used these because they were cheap and because the place I got them didnt have much of a selection.
The Remington 100 grain and the Federal 100 grain both shot pretty good and was spacing about .5 to .75 moa.
There was NO problems with feeding and the gun and bullets performed great together.
Then I tried the Federal Premium 85 grain Gameking BTHP. The gun racked the first round out of the magazine and shot right at point of aim. Then the gun would not pick up another round off the magazine. Every time I would clear it and try to rack another one it would hit the feed ramp and never go into the barrel. It was marring up the bullets and in one case it even pushed the bullet back into the casing. I think this was due to the nose of the bullet being somewhat squared compared to the other and the hollow point being possibly softer letting it deform the nose of the bullet.
When I loaded them one by one they shot great. The groups were consistently smaller and stayed around the .5 mark.
It was a miserable day to shoot where I was shooting. No shade whatsoever and the temp over 100 degrees with about 85% humidity and I was laying on a flatbed trailer and felt like a piece of bacon on a frying pan.
My left leg on my bipod worked itself loose and that made it kick further out causing the gun to lean. Then with no warning the clouds moved in and the bottom fell out of the sky. Thunderstorms moved in and that was the end of my day.
Sorry I was not able to get any pics of the groups. I had my targets set up on a large piece of plywood. in between targets we would go measure them and make some notes. My plan was to pull them all down when done but the rain had me running the other way.
Some more pics from early in the shooting session.
Overall I was very happy with the way the gun performed. The trigger will be one of the first new things I order for this gun. The trigger pull was not measured but its way too stout.
I was given this Leupold VX I to sweeten the deal and save me money where I could at least go and shoot the gun and not wait on a scope. Well, I dont know if all of the VX I models are like this one but there were NO clicks present which made adjusting the scope very difficult. When I would go to click it it would just move and not click .....not even the slightest bit. I hated that.
You will have to excuse my funny faces as I was sweating so much my eyes were burning. lol
