douglas barrels-opinions needed

anyone out there with experience with douglas barrels. looking at a .243 sporter with a douglas barrel on it. gun is supposedly 20-25 yrs old. looks to be in excellent shape. the bore is mint. the smith has been dead for some time, 10-15 years? any opinion appreciated.

May I suggest you contact Mickey Coleman of Coleman's Rifles?

He's a respected BR smith, and a very nice man to boot, and he's used Douglas barrels for quite some time. I bet he'll steer you in the right direction.

Got 2 Douglas barrels from Fred at Sharp Shooter Supply. One in 6 BR and one in 22 BR. Both are real shooters. :thumb:

When the 7mm-08 became a popular deer and silhouette cartridge about 20 years ago, I had a Douglas air guaged featherweight barrel installed on a custom Mauser. It has always shot very well. Couple years ago, I had SSS chamber a 6.5-284 Douglas HV for my Savage 112, and it also shot well until I flamed the throat at 1,200 rounds.

Ask Phil Rhyne who shot a 1000yd. light gun screamer group Sat. at Hawks Ridge Gun Club in NC. Phil backed that screamer group up with a Match Win. I'd say Phil likes his Douglas barrels pretty good. Thats a tough bunch to beat at HR.
I've got the same 9' twist Feather weight 24' Douglas barrel in .280 Ackley on my deer rifle I built in 1977. Still shoots 140 Barnes TSX's under 5/8th. @ a hundred yards. Fred Dupoy- long retired from Douglas fitted and chambered it for me back then.
Stan Taylor - who I believe took Fred's place at Tim Gardner's right hand at Douglas placed very high in last years 1000yd. shooter of the year standings and I'm sure you will hear more from the West Va. bunch this year.

Pretty is as Pretty does and I think they look like they are doing pretty good.

I have several Douglas barrels; chambered by Fred Moreo of Sharp Shooter Supply. They are all very good quality barrels that will shoot with the best of them. One of the barrels was chambered in .243 A.I. with over 1700 rds. through it. I gave it to a friend of mine who has shot over 500 rds. through it and it's still shooting.

I have Kreigers and Harts that are hand lapped, Douglas barrels are not lapped. That does not mean they don't perform. I would buy another Douglas any day of the week.

I have used Douglas barrels for years. Never a problem and they all shot very well. They are as good as any barrels out there and better than a lot of them
