Dope Cards

Is there something I’m missing here? The guy asked an honest question.

What I do is I use my ballistic AE app on my phone. I put in my load data and get the drop chart. I then shoot at each distance to confirm or adjust my drop. My app is pretty accurate out to 400 yards then it’s usually off by +\- a mil at each 100 yards after that.

I can normally only confirm to 750 yards since that the furthest range I have available. I adjust my DOPE card based off my true measurements. Windage is normally spot on. If I could shoot farther I would use the reticle in my scope to see how far off I was. I do all DOPE from a bench and solid rest.
Jammer Six is a troll. He was banned from the Hide yesterday for starting threads just like this one, and then turning them into a shit show.

I thought you had to be a sniper with 50 confirmed kills to join snipers hide? Or at least one mission from 1987 where you pull security on an abandoned oil rig....;)

Sorry couldn’t resist. Thank you for the heads up.

If I have the app on my phone, and the phone is on the bench next to the rifle, and I can update it on the spot, why would I print out a dope card? As you point out, it seems like up-to-the-moment, on-the-spot conditions are the way to go.

Why? You ask?
Ohhh, let's say yer facing due east, bright day, sun is high and THE shot presents itself. Your phone doesn't die but the contrast light level is too low to read so you have to go into the settings to brighten the screen. Noooo problem right? Just an oversight of not doing that little chore before leaving camp. So, we remove our gloves or flip the finger off so you can brighten things to legible status. Then a quick gander at the info then set it down and take the shot.

OR : Flip out the gizzie mounted to the scope tube as you do same to your scope caps, never taking your eye off the quarry till you take a gander and interpolate what you need to either dial in or hold off, eyes back on tgt and squeeze.

Hornady 4dof program is free and very good...worth a look...but you will still have to true the software to your rifle system.
That's what the "Axial Form Factor" is for. tweak it up or down to match true results. It's all based on drag curves so typically truing it at one yardage will result in all the other yardages being very close.

For the love of the gadgets, what good is that?!?! You can't tell me that you can't buy your way out of hard-earned experience, cause everyone sure loves trying!

Evan - you gave me a Like but seem to not like the little spring loaded billboard affair or were you thinking of something else? I'm confused.

What procedure do you follow for developing a dope card for a given weapon and load?

I see that there are ballistic charts included in the Hornady manual, but they only cover those specific loads.

Is the only way to develop dope to shoot at known ranges and physically measure the drop (and drift)?
Just last week you were giving me heck about "begging" for info on one particular load. Now here YOU are asking about how to develop a dope card?? I must inquire, why is it OK for you but not for others? Get out, practice, make your own "card". YOU should know by now you can buy an app that will print you one. Better yet, make this a better forum and just GET OUT.

I'm definitely agreeing with you, and presented a sarcastic comment on the internet.

Unfortunately sarcasm does not translate well on the internet. I agree that the ammo expended in developing a dope card manually is as valuable to your experience as it is to filling out the piece of paper for future use. You can't look at it as a waste of time and ammo: it's well earned experience that pays off in helping you commit that dope to memory. Buying gadgets doesn't fix a lack of experience, as much as all of us wish it could. We'd walk into the store and plunk down our money for the gadget that would make it happen.

If you have to ask, then you are not much of a shooter, nor know what needs too be done. Read a couple of good long range shooting books, then start applying the knowledge needed. And start learning how to shoot.

Kevin, meet Beach. And join him. (It actually speaks well of you that I got to you.)

I agree about the experience. I also agree about trying to buy experience-- that's why I asked about how to develop a dope card, not about how to use iPhones. I don't really trust my iPhone. It seems to fail at the damndest times. Don't get me started about marine navigation, paper charts and iPhones.

Bill, I'm a handgun instructor who swore he'd never buy a rifle. Then my wife bought me a rifle and a 650 to load for it. So no, I'm not much of a rifle guy. I'm even less of a shotgun guy, although I just inherited my father's 20 gauge pump. You'll live with it. I do.

It is a PRS forum now. Not many snipers (real OR imagined) on there now. Lot's of noobs getting into longrange gun games asking stupid questions though.
