Does this sound logical ????

I have a model 2000 RCBS scale. It
has suddenly started drifting to the
point of inaccuracy up to .7.
I called RCBS and was told to unplug
it and wipe everything w/a dryer sheet,
to remove static electricity. I havent
used it since doing this. Does this
sound like a fix or just something to
pacify me??? LDS

It is not to pacify you. Yes, and other manufacturers recommend similar fixes. Static can effect the scale and this is a quick way to eliminate or rectify that problem.

Yep...it works. I also wrapped the wristband of a personal antistatic cord like those used when working on delicate electronics (available from many sources) around the hopper and attached the "gator clip" to electronic ground. Seems to work so far.

My RCBS Chargemaster Combo has a metal frame you can see underneath it. I grounded it to my very substantial metal loading bench frame, which sits on concrete. I have no static problems.

Larry,
Might I suggest you isolate your scale by putting inside a four sides enclosure much like the high dollar scale use or what loaders use at the range to load so that wind and other interference has no effect. Also, when you do that, plug the scale into a Surge Protector to make sure there are no spikes in electrical power. I have the older model of what you have and found that anything that cycles (ballasts, air flow, refrigerator cycling, any electronic signal emitter etc) that is within 48" of the scale effects the readings and causes drifting to boot. So I've made sure there are no sources of interference and have that 4' "clear zone" around all my scales. Just an idea to try.

I wipe everything, scale and powder measure with a dryer sheet. It really helps. I keep a dryer sheet handy at my loading bench.
I found kernels of powder sticking in the drop tube of my Herrels measure, I cut a 1/8 inch wide strip of dryer sheet, and passed it through the 3/16 hole of the drop tube. Problem solved.

Yes the dryer sheets work. My girlfriend is a veterinarian and when it's windy the horses get shocked when you touch their nose and get mad enough to bite you. Dryer sheets work on horses too.

I used the dryer sheet, and it calmed the scale down. Who would have thought??? They say you learn something every day. I guess this was it for today. LDS

If static is a problem, consider a humidifier. Static potential is greatly increased in dry air.
