Does this look right?

My first experience with forming 6PPC cases from 220 Russian. So step 1 is to expand the neck from .220" to .243". Did that and then made 1st pass through K&M neck turner. Side-by-side pic shown below.

As expected, the OAL decreased very slightly. What bothers me is the "coke bottle" shape of the shoulder. I'm assuming that sharpens up when the brass is fire formed in the 6PPC chamber. But I thought I would verify this assumption before proceeding.

Also, does the neck turn look to be deep enough into the shoulder? Without having a sharp and distinct junction and being new to this cartridge, I'm not certain.

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I think mine might look a little different.

220 Russian expanded to 6mm with a K&M Expander Mandrel. Neck turned in two steps with a K&M Turner on the left, unfired. Once fired case on the right.

I don't have a virgin 220 Russian Case to compare with now.

They may need another firing to be fully formed, not sure yet but they look close. I'm fire forming these shooting varmints out in my paddock, I thought why waste a bullet and powder so put them to good use. Just an old fire forming barrel, have not shot these in my Bench Rifle as yet. Probably another 70 to go out of my 200 cases then work up a competition load.

The best I can measure the turned neck area is approx 0.280" long, not counting the shoulder cut.. Just looks a little different to Kyle's length but it may just be the photo's.

Be careful continuing to cut straight down where the neck-shoulder junction is going to be. You'll end up making a thin weak spot at the base of that cut. I would over expand, FL size to form a good junction line, then turn with a cutter that has the appropriate angle for your shoulder. Can't just keep cutting lower with the same diameter when the shoulder isn't formed.

I'd be willing to bet the turn feels a lot harder at the base of your last cut. Am I right? If so, that's because you're turning straight down into where the shoulder angle will be. Not good.

No difference in feel between cases 3 and 4. At this point, I've made 1st pass on 5 cases. Heading towards 0.0098" for a .265"chamber neck. Will fireform these 5 cases and inspect before making any other adjustments. And as Ledd Slinger cautioned, I'd rather be a tad short than too long. Thanks again to all.

Kyle,

The picture Tim Singleton posted is perfect. You need to cut deeper into the shoulder. If you don’t you’re asking for accuracy problems later.
