Does my Shilen prefit have a .272 neck?

I've got a Shilen prefit barrel for savage from NSS. It is a 1:8 6BR Norma. I looked on the Shilen website and it sounded like .272 is their standard dimension for 6BR Norma. Can I assume that this is a .272 neck since it wasn't specified when I got the barrel?

Thanks

You know what asume means . The best thing is to check . With the new blue box it shouldn't be a problem. But it could also be a tight neck . A phone call is the thing I would do. Larry

I have Shilen from Jim, the neck dimension is scribed on the end of the barrel, look real close with a light, you should be able to read it.

I'm actually off at school and away from my components, but I feel like I looked at the back of the barrel and didn't see it. There was some writing, but I don't recall a chamber dimension. I'll just give Jim a call at some point. I'll also have to study the Lapua brass situation a bit closer. I didn't realize they manufactured different neck dimensions. I thought everybody just turns them down if needed.

I have a Shilen Savage prefit and it has the neck dimension written on the chamber end of the barrel (inside the chamber). It also has the twist and barrel profile scribed there too.

Ah thank you so much! I probably just didn't look close enough. What do the other markings on your barrel signify, Andro1d? I understand the neck diameter and the twist rate, but what about the markings at 9 and 3 o'clock?

Mozilla, your neck diameter is actually written inside the chamber? That's interesting.

The SM stands for Select Match,, S8 is a Savage 1" bull contour,, and the 8 mean's 8 twist.

Not sure if that's an S by it's self meaning stainless,, or 5 for 5r I'll have to get one of my Shillen's out and have a look.

Of course not. What I meant to say was it is written on the chamber end of the barrel, but I didn't want to imply that it's written on the outside of the barrel so you could see it when the bolt is closed. It's on the butt end of the barrel and, assuming it's mounted on an action, you have to look inside the action to see it. Sorry for the confusion. I should have made it more clear.

Ok I understand. I sure thought that would be an awfully strange thing to do... I had somebody send me a picture of my barrel and it does not have a neck diameter specified. I should be getting a call from Jim about sometime today.

Just try to chamber a round and shoot it. Measure neck afterwards and it will give you an idea. There will be a little spring back.
