I am looking for a load to use for varmints, (PA Ground hogs)...... Tried Benchmark and 125 BTs but no good. Does anyone use Varget? Can anyone give me some starting loads?
Thanks in advance,
Bob

Re: Does any use Varget in a 308 with 125 gr bullets

I have had good results with 52gr of win. 748 and with 50 gr of varget. Both sub .5moa using sierra 125gr pro hunter bullets both loads are pretty hot loads so work up.

I load 125g Nosler Ballistic tips using 48.0g Varget for my Remington 600. This load results in 1/2" groups from the Rem 600. This gun is used as brush gun to hunt southern whitetail deer. I don't have any long range data for your purposes.

46 gr IMR 4895 really shoots with 125 BT in many 308 rifles I have loaded for. They are tougher than a varmint bullet. I use this load for deer. It kills like lightening strikes them. I used to use the 125 Sierra in a 30-06 to shoot ground hogs and that bullet is much softer than the ballistic tip. The Speer 125 TNT is a great varmint bullet. I have used it in my 30X47 HBR.

Over the years I've load for close to a dozen .308 Win's and have yet to find one that didn't shot 125gr NBT - 51.0gr W748 extremely well.

RJ

My PSS likes 125 NBTs with 48.5gr of Varget but the 135gr Bergers are better.

Not wishing to hi-jack your topic but what is the twist you are using? Would a 1:12 twist be adequate for such a light bullet? Interesting topic. Thanks.

1:12 works fine with the Nosler 125. For that matter, I've seen good accuracy with the stubby little 110 gr Sierra varmint bullets from the same barrel.

Casspir, I have tried the 125 grain bullets in my 10 twist 30-06 and they will not shoot, but shoot great from my fathers 1-12. I have even had good results from 110gr HP's in his gun, though I think they would benefit from a 1-13.
With the 308 being just a bit slower, I think a 1-12 will do OK.

If you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself to see the devastation that occurs when a woodchuck or prairie dog are hit with a 110-125gr 30cal. at 3400fps.
