Does anybody still think the 40x is special?

My heart still races a bit when I see a 40x. Especially a rimfire. But any 40x will do. They all just seem to shoot well. For some reason, I still think the 700 - 40x action is one of the best looking actions out there. I’ve gone as far as putting 700 bolt handles on custom Remington clone actions. To each their own…

I thought they were special when I was looking for actions to build some prairie dog rifles. When I decided to sell them, I found out they weren't very special.

40x buyers seem to either want a factory rifle that is nearly mint, or an action for peanuts.

I'll likely never do another build on anything besides custom actions.

While at the range one day I had a guy admiring one of my rifles. He then became almost indignant when he noticed the 40X stamp. He made it his personal mission to make sure that I understood that it was “only” a 700….lol.

I didn’t even bother to tell him that it had been timed and trued as well as having a PTG coned bolt installed by a very competent and well known gun smith and that I had less invested in than a what a new 700 action was going for at that time.

The guy didn’t talk to me anymore after the first trip down range and he saw that my 700 was shooting inside of his custom actioned rifle.

Oh, but mine is special, as Gronk would say. And it gets the USAA military discount.

Remington green McMillan, that Remington bedded, along with steel bottom metal, put a big lug on, Jewel trigger and cerakoted. The custom shop sold it with the short, simple Badger base, Badger rings and lupy 30mm 10x scope.

While I didn’t throw those away, this got the proper, tall Badger steel base for its slotted top and its large screws holes, proper USMC 34 mm rings, and the proper Premier scope the Marines used, along with S&B PM II’s for scout sniper selection.

Uhhhhh..........what am I missing here...what is the USAA military discount? I carried their auto insurance for a looooong time, but?

Remington 40XB Rangemaster in 243 Win.

Vintage 1970s with original S2 Stainless barrel. Single shot. Leupold 36 power scope. Grandson can hit an egg with it @ 300 yards. Used a Redfield 6x18 variable scope when hunting woodchuck years ago on the farm. Factory original. Bought after custom barreled Win M70 failed to produce small groups.

40X Great guns.
Having shot many factory rifles in 243 Win from the 70s my 40x was the best of the lot. Having shot the 40x & 700 HB side by side, compare 1/2" to 1". The worst shooter was a Ruger #1 HB. The Sako L579 Forester in 243 Heavy Barrel came close to the 40x. The Savage model 99 was a fun gun. Ok for huntjng.

My shooting buddy had the 222 rem 40XBBR. A very accurate rifle for its time.
Then compared to now, very different. Like drag racing. 8 seconds then, 3.7 seconds now.

… missing nothing major, there’s just a current funny USAA tv commercial that plays on guys that think they are special, (but they don’t get USAA insurance rates because it’s only for military families).

I've owned four 40x rifles but am.down to one.My first was a 308 40x repeater that I sent back to Remington in 1988 and had barreled to 6mmBR with 1-14 twist and it shot amazing.i.also had a .22 bull gun that was as accurate as My Anschutz 2017.It was just too heavy for position shooting in my hands.
Another was a .222 with a set of Redfield sights used for reduced NRA Highpower matches.A tack driver.
The one I've kept is a light barreled. 22 former US Government target rifle. Its beautiful and as accurate as my other dozen. 22 match rifles.
To me they are works of art and quite special

My first real benchrest rifle was a factory 40x-BR in 6x47. I shot it for a couple years then re-barreled and restocked it (still a 6x47 but with Hart barrel and Brown stock). I won a lot of stuff with this rifle. I even placed second in unlimited with it once. I moved on to custom actions but still liked the 40X. I don't shoot BR very often any more but when I do, I shoot a 40-x, in a Brown stock, and with a barrel chambered for the original 6BR. WH

Had a few over the years, always thought they were special. One of my best scores was a minty 70's 40xb in 7mag w/ 6-18 Redfield. Seller had a price of $450 (early 90's) and said he couldn't get it to shoot much under an inch. Took about 10 seconds to notice the barrel pressing hard on the L side on the stock. Couldnt get the money out of my pocket fast enough. That rifle would hammer 4" @ 600yds w/ the factory barrel.

This one S Masker put together for chucking. Has a used $50 Hart 6 PPC HV barrel that he cut an inch off both ends and chambered in 6br REM .262......it does alright lol.

Dayum! Thats nice.

When I was contemplating shooting score benchrest I considered a 40X. But, I was naive and had some good input from other shooters. I ended up purchasing a used Panda 6mm PPC. I soon found that in score one was at a distinct disadvantage with a 6mm hole vs. a .308 one. I had the gun rebuilt and chambered in a 30BR. Moral of the story is look before you leap.

I have two of the new 700 Single Shot actions. One I have had barreled the other one js sitting in the safe with a Trigger Tech trigger I put on it. Thinking of making a 6 BRA or a 223 out of it. It has a 308 bolt, but that is easily fixed.. Edit I forgot to add my point, The face of the receiver is true according to my gunsmith. I have seen where several smiths remarked they were surprised at how true they were given Remingtons history. I guess CNC machines helped them out.

The big difference between the 700 and 40X rifles has always been the barrel. Never saw much difference in the quality of the 2 actions made during the same time period and I've had over 100 of them apart. For that reason, I only bought single shot 40X's for my own use, seeing no difference in the actions of the repeater 40X and the 700. I have several of the new 700 SS single shot actions and concur that they are the best Rem. actions I have seen.
