Dodge trucks

It's amazing to hear these big mpg numbers:rolleyes:
It is amazing to see the mileage everyone is getting, I have a 2015 F350 6.7 up here in MT., tow a 28' 5th wheel with a 19' boat behind it, ave about 10mpg! With all the 20+ mpg diesel trucks out there all I can say is WOW! I feel I'm pretty straight forward on my mileage when I say I get close to 10mpg when towing, 14mpg in town and 16-17mpg doing 75-80mph on the hwy empty! Can I get 20mpg in my truck, you betcha, but who the hell wants to drive 60-65mph! This is my second diesel over the last 17 years! The ONE point I have failed to read about in here with regards to towing with the 1/2 tons is the STOPPING ability! Now I'm talking about in nasty conditions, sure every 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton gas or diesel will tow it, but you put a little snow and ice on the road towing through passes and hills, good freaking luck when that deer steps out or trouble lies ahead and you need to stop that big load! Just my .02 worth! P.S. I have been doing my shooting as well, just finished load development for my 284, look out boys, there's a new sheriff in town!

There are a lot of inflated numbers for sure!! It's just like group sizes, only on reverse ;) If you read through all 180 posts, there are a couple times that stopping power was brought up.

I've just done the math on my 2013 6.7. I've put on just hair over 20k since may when I bought it. It's towed 13.5k of that time with my trailer grossing 24,100ish. My average mpg of those 20k is just over 12.9mpg. Almost 1575 gallons. 580 hours.

Geno,
Did get around to checking the label on the door, after looking up the code, it indicates I have4:10 gears and they are limited slip. So thats a good thing. Just received the Mikes Tuner yesterday and after it gets the plugs changed I will install the new tuner program. This should cure the 3 gear downshift problem on uphill grades. Thanks for your input.

I've let one of my mileage trip sets go since I've owed the truck, I'm at 13.1 through 45,000 miles! City, Hwy and towing!

The numbers you and Geno state are much more realistic;) If I had to tow the amount of weight you guy's are towing, I would, without hesitation, be driving a F-350 with the Scorpion under the hood. I prefer the Blue Oval for looks, fit & finish, and quality of components.

The 1/2 ton pickups don't have as heavy a braking system of identical year 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, but their braking system has been upgraded dramatically over the years. Like I stated before, my 2014 Ram 1500 has larger rotors and calipers than my old 1989 Chevy 2500 did. The tow ratings of today's trucks aren't just based on engine hp. Braking, suspension, and chasis stabilty/strength also gets punched into the equation (maybe tires too). So if a 1/2 ton truck is rated to tow 10k-11k lbs, you can be sure it will stop the load safely and in a hurry. If someone is towing more than the manufacturer rated towing capacity, then any accident is because of their stupidity. And to add insult to injury, their insurance company probably will not cover the costs.

I was more referring that the heavier truck wouldn't get pushed around as much from behind by your load! 5000lbs vs 8000lbs vehicle. Not saying you couldn't do it!

True. Suspension, sway bars, traction control, and tires also play a big part in how a truck handles during stopping. But weight definitely helps.

You also mentioned snowy and icy roads. I've lived in Montana my whole life and we both know that nothing is gonna stop quickly if the roads are slick. Dont care what youre driving. Seen countless18 wheelers slide off the road just the same as 1/2 ton trucks pulling small trailers. Heck, don't even have to be hauling anything, nothing is gonna stop fast on ice.
