Do you need / want a tuner on a 30BR?

Mike i never said tuners didnt work at long range (i use them at long range) i said it was a bad idea to actually twist one in f-class where you cant verify what you have done- not long range br. I use the ezell tuner (i have for maybe 8 years or so) but in my main game (short range br on a 10.5lb ppc) we use different tuners and i have been using them successfully for many years- like 15+. They are lighter and adjust differently because of the shorter lighter barrels. I dont think id consider myself too inexperienced because you didnt teach me to use a tuner and not many in my game use your tuner even though everybody uses A tuner and has for many years. But i still respect the work youve done in your style tuner game and thatll never change.
I certainly didn't mean for this to get as sideways as it did and I should've chosen my words more carefully. Tuners are always a controversial subject and I make tuners...so some of this is to be expected. We won't always agree about where the best place to eat is either but surely we can agree to disagree about a detail regarding how to best use tuners and just move forward. I hope I made my point to those that are willing to listen and that whatever method anyone uses...I hope we all shoot small. Do what works for you.

That said, walking on egg shells amongst friends is not my thing. I pretty much break every one. Mostly, I mean no harm or disrespect toward you or anyone. I think when words are typed, they sometimes come out differently than intended. I like to type like we're sitting around having a beer together. Often, the smile or chuckle doesn't get seen or heard. And yes, sometimes the wrong words are chosen. Regardless...I think if we were all sitting around having a beer, we'd laugh and disagree..we'd all still be friends and nobody would be upset. At least I hope that's the way it would go and I wish we could do the same here.

Well said Mike

Sorry Dusty but this is just flat wrong. Some very good customers of mine shoot f-class and they win with my tuners! Many or most are currently at the top of the heap. The biggest difference between long range and short is sighters, being able to see them and good notes. Tuners work the same way, regardless of distance. They have no idea how far the target is. Condition variables are the biggest factor. You have to begin by knowing what in tune and each mark from in to out looks like on paper. When you know that, the yardage doesn't matter except that it exaggerates as you go further and you have to make good wind calls.
The wind call factor is still important at short range but we have unlimited sighters. Good notes are more important when sighters are not unlimited. Otherwise...no real difference.
But we don't have unlimited time! ;-)

Now dang it Frankie...Lol!
In UBR you have a 3 minute warm up and your very first shot is a mulligan. The gun I shoot now in custom use to be a 220 beggs and had a different make of tuner on it. Yes, I built it for him but the guy wanted to try one of these tuners and I said, sure.
Bottom line, I mounted the scope and loaded the ammo the night before the match for a gun that I had never shot, scope not set an zero load tuning. I just threw 26.0 of lt32 with the bullet just touching the lands when seated. I used my mulligan on the first shot....no worries. I adjusted the crosshairs over to the bullet hole and went up top and shot a half inch 3 shot group! Uh oh! Of course i'm hoping it was just completely out of tune. Lol! I moved this other tuner a little more than I would mine but similarly. Shot another 3 shot group and it's close! I made 1 more tiny adjustment and shot one last 3 shot group on the sighter. BINGO! It dotted up! I didn't win that day but it was not for lack of a competitive tune. I did what I just described with almost a minute and a half to spare in my 3 minute warm up. That's what a tuner can do when you are comfortable using one. ;)

Actually on this note I spoke to a "very well respected and known" smith the other day and he said almost exactly the same thing about "the other" tuner, it is smaller and would take about twice the amount of adjustment.

Another way to never have to change much with the tuner is tune each each barrel/gun combination and leave it until the barrel has lost it’s edge.

I think it depends on your game. IME, that edge can go away during the same day, with temps being the easiest condition variable to follow. SR br shooters change their load as the day goes, very often.

My tuner experience Mike is mostly because you have helped me understand how to adjust your tuner. For me, the huge benefit of any tuner is you can keep your same load and just tweak the tuner to conditions.

Oh...then I misunderstood your post. That's exactly how I do it. Only move it when necessary but tune changes. Tuners are just like changing powder charge to maintain tune as it goes out. Sorry for my confusion.
