Do you need / want a tuner on a 30BR?

Maybe/probably. Like Jim said most are using them. My current barrel I’m not, but I’m not ruling them out in the future either.

if you are not shipping ammo to other locations i would tell you absolutely not for fclass, i would also recommend that you take your ammo to the range in a cooler with room temperature gel packs, this will take any temp fluctuation out of ur equation, tuners complicate things, i shooting ben avery i see guys with tuners all the time, if they miss a couple shots in the 9 ring they think the tuner can save them so they turn it, guess what, it then costs them more shots, stay simple in my mind,
Nick
I totally agree with you for f-class- its not a good idea at all, but for his 30br i wouldnt recommend going without one if hes going to preload. If you dont get sighters before each target a tuner is a bad idea

no score benchrest matches at ben avery….
oppsssssss

Everybody I know has a tuner. @gunsandgunsmithing , Mike Ezell
Is what I was suggested for the one that will be finished by Spring.
I talked to Mike some. Very nice & knowledgeable guy on the subject.

so you are making comments about BENCH REST SHOOTING and you do not.
" not keep score" lol because it is a group match, not a score match
I do
there is a match this weekend,
group, heavy and sporter, 100/200 yards
group has RINGS, but no NUMBER value.

i never get over to benchrest range however it seems like they shoot quite a few matches, i wonder why they would not keep score? Benchrest nationals are held there i believe,

Sorry Dusty but this is just flat wrong. Some very good customers of mine shoot f-class and they win with my tuners! Many or most are currently at the top of the heap. The biggest difference between long range and short is sighters, being able to see them and good notes. Tuners work the same way, regardless of distance. They have no idea how far the target is. Condition variables are the biggest factor. You have to begin by knowing what in tune and each mark from in to out looks like on paper. When you know that, the yardage doesn't matter except that it exaggerates as you go further and you have to make good wind calls.
The wind call factor is still important at short range but we have unlimited sighters. Good notes are more important when sighters are not unlimited. Otherwise...no real difference.

So if you were in an f class match you’d twist your tuner? I agree lots of people have them now. Theres a lot of guys shooting dashers in prs too.

I'd move my tuner, regardless of the type of shooting I'm doing if conditions take me out of tune...100%!

Would I change it in the middle of a group?....not likely. Same with short range. You establish tune BEFORE you go to record.

No offense, but I thought you understood tuners better than that. They are no different than changing powder charge. I may be wrong but I doubt you'd change powder charge in the middle of your short range group...or am I wrong?

Ive been using tuners since jackie started pushing them. I understand them very well. I also understand f-class where you cant move your tuner after the first target like i can move one in short range any time i want to because i can verify my moves- an f-class tuner is decoration or a recipe for disaster- according to if you move it or not. If it keeps your tune and dont need to be moved its a good thing to have

I shoot a tuner in f class. I don’t dick around with it during a match, but it’s helpful during load development and for occasionally tweaking loads later. Absolutely necessary? No. But I like having it, especially if tweaking a load at the range via seating depth isn’t practical.

If you can tune *during* an f class match, more power to you. You’re a better man than I am.

There was and apparently still is, since Jackie Schmidt's testing, a misunderstanding of what a tuner does and doesn't do.

Yes, seeing tune is critical and seeing tune at distance, in the real world, with wind etc, is more difficult at long range. That's exactly why good notes are invaluable. Bottom line is, the tuner has zero affect on external ballistics. What it does at 100, it does at 1000, but bigger. If you test YOUR TUNER at 100 and see what group size and shape is relative to tuner setting...it does carry out to distance. A tuner ONLY affects the barrel...not what the bullet does after it leaves the barrel. It has nothing to do with distance, per se. If you trust your last target, be it sighter or record, and your notes agree with the results...you should know what to do to correct it without further adou(sp). If you don't, you were chasing your tail before you started.

I shot an Ezell tuner on my LG every match this last season in 1k IBS. It does not move point of impact at 1k all that much until you turn it to the point that it verticals out.
In your game i agree- you have windflags (if you want them) and a sighter period. If you had nothing but those nra flags and 2 shots to verify you went the right way i think youd be like me and not move the tuner- especially at 600&1000yds

I will say this...when in doubt, leave it alone. Same with powder charge. If your target doesn't agree wqith your notes...leave it alone.

BUT...IF YOU TARGET, BE IT SIGHTER OR RECORD, AGREES WITH YOUR NOTES, MOVE IT ACCORDINGLY...JUST LIKE WITH POWDER CHARGE. IT'S NO DIFFERENT!

Allow me to clarify....If my notes are that I should be 2 marks out of tune based on temps or other variables, and my group shape confirms two marks out, by size and shape...I just verified my notes to my results, regardless of yardage. I just confirmed what I thought...I'm very, very likely...two marks out. Sure...distance aqnd the associated wind are HUGE variables. It can still be wrong but not very likely, if your notes confirm group size and shape on paper.

Tuners aren't mystical nor magical...It's physics, which makes them predictable and repeatable. Granted, they can't fix what you can't see, though.

They cant fix what you cant see, Like at a range with only nra flags somewhere down the line?
Except what you're completely disregarding...If group size and shape agree with your notes, tune or lack of it...and what to do about it with a tuner...were just confirmed. You have verified tune by your target, compared to your notes.

Dusty, I'd be happy to discuss this with you elsewhere or I'm happy to do it here. But I am sorta experienced in this subject.
