Do we have any trappers here?

Trapped 500 to 700 coon per fall a few years when I was younger and they were worth the time. Trapped and snared a bunch of coyotes also over the years. Just keep them knocked back a bit on my farm these days.

Wow, this brings back memories of a very long time ago, late 50's when I trapped muskrats in a local stream. The fur was marketable as lining for gloves. I had mixed results but managed to earn a few bucks to supplement my allowance. I used the old spring actuated leg traps I got from my uncle. It was so long ago I only have a vague recollection of the endeavor.

As a kid, I wanted to be a mountain man but never had the guts to go off the grid and do it.

I used to trap . Job was kinda seasonal. Tried to set for whatever making sign, mostly coon, mink.muskrats ,beaver. Coyotes were the smartest varmint I ever tried to catch. Count on one hand the coyotes I caught. Doug

I had game cameras out for deer in three locations this fall. I got tired of the raccoon/opossum pics. So I set 15 220's out (box and trail sets) ran three days. 15 opossum, 8 raccoon, 3 ditch cougar. Watching for otter sign, would like to catch another one or two.

Back in the day. I was an avid trapper, in fact took seven years off of work and live in a tent running traplines in the winter and odd jobs and doing control work the rest of the year. District director of the MN trappers assc., trappers ed instructor and did beaver control work in MN and WI. I finally went back to work when the bottom started falling out of the fur market.

@bobinpa how about you?
D3 here but I haven't set a trap in probably 20 years. Still have them all though. The good stuff too, Victor, B&L, Montgomery... I worked for a guy that bought and sold a lot of fur in the '80s and '90s. He used to be friends with a guy that did the same around Butler if I remember correct. I believe D2 includes the Butler area, correct?
Brings back some good memories of when life was simpler....

Yes. Lots of guys backed off setting. The PTA member numbers still matter though (polyticks).
I'm sure we have mutual friends. D3 are a good crew.
The State convention is just North of us in D1 next time. The tailgater section is my fav. Big yard sale of man stuff. Everyone welcome.
Enough of me derailing the guys topic lol.

Started when I was prolly 14 years old. My buddy had a paper route and made about ten bucks profit a week. I set traps and shot muskrats after school and made ten or twelve a night.
During my "career" as a trapper, I saw the price of rats go from a buck fifty to as high as eight bucks. In the hey-day, I acquired trapping rights on a huge ranch that was miles and miles of ditches around pasture and farm lands. Thousands of rats for the skinning.
I've still got a couple hundred traps, rat an coyote, but now fur is worthless. :( jd

I run 100+ snares. 30 or so leg holds on several ranches. Only Bobcats bring in money no other animals bring in a cent besides bounties
