Do it yourself Stock making thread

I've got one...
Not many of us dinosaurs around anymore!
Can't compete with a 5 axis CNC.

Beautiful work.
I'm a proud dinosaur! I still use a flip phone.:D I know what a duplicator costs. I can only imagine what a 5 axis CNC machine would cost. Then, I'd have to hire some kid to program the darn thing!

Here's proof for her, Gary! I don't remember how long I've had it. Maybe 10 years or more. I have another brand new one in a drawer for when this one dies. It's a "military grade". Shockproof, waterproof, etc.

I've got to show Ann your last post , she insists I'm the only flip phone user remaining . But when she can't get a signal or her battery is dead , guess what she asks for ?

I've ruined two of those so called military grade phones, guess I"m just hard on eequipment! Josh, thank you for all the time and work you put into this thread, even if I never build a stock it was an enjoyable read. You could send this thread to a printer and be on the best seller list in no time, make some extra bullet money as I read earlier.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm on my second one of those phones. The first one got crushed in it's belt holster. I changed to a "concealed carry" and keep it in my front left pocket(right next to the family jewels). It's funny how I naturally protect that area of my body.:D

I may have missed it in this thread, but I was on Boyds website today and you can get a laminate blank for $60. If I had any creativity in me at all, I could go for that price.

I bet that would work. Something that may surprise a lot of people is that the most expensive board in that picture is the figured Sapele. It cost me $200 for that 2 1/4" x 6 1/2" x 9' board. I can get 4 stocks out of it so my "blank" cost is $50/each. That's for some very nice exotic hardwood. I did have to control myself when I looked at a piece of highly figured Lacewood. They wanted $1000 for the piece. That would have been $250 per blank. I may go back for that one at Christmas and treat myself. It was unbelievably gorgeous!:)

How much would a stock cost for a standard Rem 700 footprint? Nothing radical, just a pretty wood, sporter stock??

Well, stay tuned. I'm not in the business of selling stocks, but I do make one sometimes to donate and support the forum. The last one fetched $500.

Well I’m apart of the forum so if you donate it to me, you’re supporting the forum! Boom! ;):D

I’ll take one Rem 700 stock made of the richest mahogany please!

Great work. If you decide to start selling let me know.

Ya know, I've gotten quite a few of those "offers". Heck of a business opportunity!! Are you a Democrat or a Communist?:eek::eek::rolleyes:;)

Just kidding!:p

How hard is it to build one of these stocks without having an action available? I"m saving up for a stiller, but I could start piddling with a stock right now.

Hi John: Do you feel lucky? You may be. I have 2 Stiller Predators. Mag fed and single shot. Most dimensions can be "fudged" a little. The critical ones are action screw centers, the action bottom to bottom metal or trigger guard. Thickness and shape for trigger guard. I use pillars, among other reasons, to set my bottom metal depth in the stock. It makes it so much easier. I can measure those dimensions for you off of my actions. The trigger guard or bottom metal should be bought so you can make the template for it. Let me know if this helps. Josh

I've cut some new blanks out of the woods I just bought. I'll be making a few single shot "F class type" stocks out of some. I simply modified the forearm cut to remove the wood that covered the magazine for the repeater actions. I'll be glueing wood on the forearm sides to make them 3" wide. The bottom pic shows the template under the blank to outline the change. I have left extra wood that will be removed later, when the action is set and I know my trigger guard/pillar depth.

Then there's my "kid" who, after showing him the neat exotics, says that he really likes the maple. ( He claimed the last stock I did) Down to Home Depot and dig thru the rack. Bingo. I found some more figured. $24.00 This time I'm doing a walnut center, Cherry, then the maple sides. We'll see how that turns out.

Hi Preacher. That contrast looks nice. I've noticed some of your postings involve pistols and grips. I have some Cherry pieces set aside that you might be able to use for something like that. They looked "interesting" for a small project. They've been in my dehumidified shop for 4 years now, drying. Want them? They seem to be Cherry burls. I cut them off a tree I took down. Just pay shipping.

Thanks Josh,
Always looking for pieces to work with...
I'll PM my shipping address and will pay the shipping..

Ok! I'll get it out to you.

Back to stockmaking.
I'm going to finish the Tikka 595 stock to revive my skills before I start with the exotic blanks. I'm going to post progress pics and "times" to give you an idea of how long it takes. Please hold comments as I'm a little rusty and I know it.One of the reasons I seek out these older 595 actions is because they're flat bottom actions like a Panda and Kodiak.

Mark blank centers, drill pillar holes, put blank in jigs, cut barrel channel and action inlet.- 4 hours
