Do it yourself Stock making thread

It must be that time here aswell as I've just cut some timber ready for glueing up aswell. But have been busy machine Ali rails so stock making has been put on hold. But it's the end of our club season here in Australia so its shed time again getting a few stocks ,rails and blocks ready for next season.

I'm not seeing a maple blank.
I’m working on it!!
My wood guy gave me a couple hunks. The big one has the stripes going the wrong way. The small one is only 4 1/2” tall. I’m going to have to glue pieces together. Not ideal. I’m working on design options before I put a week into it!

Moving forward....slowly...
These are for 2 Tikka t3 223s. Not sure what the 3rd is for yet.AF1593D9-DCDE-411D-B7A5-74D29732BF3D.jpeg22950C86-A501-4F44-A626-DCCF74F89E75.jpeg

Ok, Ok! Keep your britches on! I had to go take some pics to show you how! I don’t move that fast, anymore!
First, you need to leave about 3/8” extra wood above your butt pad.6BD71183-151D-423E-A8F9-A44661A0BC53.jpeg
Then you shape the side of your stock to where you want it. (With your cheek riser installed, so it matches)

Then you cut a paper pattern to figure out the size , location and shape you want.5EBA10ED-FD36-4F0F-8E61-6122347F4E4E.jpeg
Cut a square piece, bigger than what you need, 3/8 thick. It gets tricky here. Try to follow me. The piece you cut is what I call “fragile” so I like to strengthen it with another thin piece, with the grain running perpendicular to your main piece. I push the square piece thru my table saw so I take an eight inch off the inside and a quarter inch higher than the bottom of my cheek piece. I cut some eighth inch walnut to fill in that cut and glue it in place. When it dries, I glue it to my cheek piece.

How did you do that Monte Carlo. Ive been thinking about trying to dupe a R700 wood stock. You start looking at one of those though and there are a lot of curved surfaces.
Round nose router bit, Round files, gouges etc. You can even make that with sandpaper but it takes a long time. You just have to finish it smooth and plan how you'll do it a bit.

I use a Dremel with a small sanding drum, files and wooden dowels with sand paper glued to them. Carefully!!

Thats one way too. Leave the wood alone that is supposed to stay and take the rest. I think I prefer using all hand tools but if there wood if really figured or laminated, rotary tools are nice.

Thanks twd
Actually, its pretty easy to build a stock. To build one that looks good and doesn't need filler and paint to look good is tougher. Buy a chunk of something cheap like birch and just do like Joshb shows in this thread. You can get by with a lot fewer tools than he uses. Figure out how to use the tools and if the stock looks a little bad, paint it. The only way to learn to use the tools is to hack away at some wood.

Priceless!

Oh, and spend a little time to try and match the grain patterns. It’ll look better in the end!

I built a stock when this thread was originally going. I built a second one during the quarantine earlier this year. See pic. The second one isn’t even all the way roughed out, but for various reasons I’m giving up on it. Ill put the reasons in a different post. I use a milling machine to do a lot of the work on them.
