Do it yourself Stock making thread

You're right, Preacher. I tried a Dremel with a small round cutter. Doable, but time consuming. Top piece is the hose clamp special. Bottom piece is with the pneumatic scaler with sharpened rods. It doesn't make the holes deep enough to match the original. The paint fills in the holes, too.

I have a Doan Trevor stock and some hand grips for my Eliso stocks. I was talking to Doan and he stipples with a 16 penny nail that is dulled to suite him and a hammer. Check out his web site he hand stipples everything. I tried duplicating it on a grip I made and it sucks.

I managed to get a few hours in. Stippling is almost done. The edges have to be done with a Dremel to prevent chipping off pieces. Slow work!

I finished the stippling, sanded the stock to 600 and put 4 coats of rubberized paint on the stipple areas. A few coats of oil and this one is done.

:)Thanks Dusty. The butt has a little bit of interesting grain in it. The stock is as close to an original as I can get it. I'm going to get a few more coats on it, touch up a few details and it'll be finished.;)

Josh, you should make a stamp for doing the stippling. Something with a bit of a convex face. Look up how Auriou make files by hand.

Thanks Alex. I played with several different home made tools. A small bunch of Sharpened 4d finish nails, electrical taped together worked the best. Another "tool" worked well when used like a hammer. It was a bit I bought to use in a router for the duplicator. Like a large core box bit with spines sticking out of it. I'm probably only going to do one more of these, so I'm not thinking of getting tooled up for it. I was challenged by a member here to try for an exact duplicate. There's something unsettling about doing that finish on a nice piece of Walnut. I'd like to try checkering one, then using a dark stain. That seems more civilized. Can't let Preacher have all the fun.;)

Well, there has to be SOME benefit of a custom "one off" versus a mass produced stock.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: I should have dusted off the original before I took the picture. Might have been a subconscious thing on my part.;) Preacher's oil makes anything look great.
