Do I need a new barrel

I’m seeing what looks like fire cracking at the first 1/2 “ of the leade going into the rifling but then goes away looking down the rest of the barrel. The barrel is a used krieger with about 1000 rounds fired. Still shoots good. Does this look like the barrel is almost shot out?

If it still shoots than I'd say it's ok . The reason to replace is loss of accuracy. Clean it a little more than usual and check to see how much more you need seat your bullet out .

Agreed. If it still shoots to your personal level of accuracy standards, there's no reason to replace it. Wouldn't hurt to start planning a new barrel tho. If it has to be custom ordered, most barrel makers are at least 8 weeks out or more. Don't know how often you shoot that rifle, but barrel production lead times are something to consider if you are starting to see a deterioration in accuracy.

Looks pretty normal, if not better than normal for a 1000 rds. 1/2" of crackling. From my meager experience, you may have 500 + more good rds. I don't think anyone can say for sure but I would start thinking about a new barrel, if you are into any type of competition toward mid season. Depends on what type of shooting and competing you are doing. I have a 284 shehane with a lot more crackling than that and I am at 1500 rds and still shooting good to win but I am closely watching and have a new barrel to swap out with, already broken in tuned and 100 rds. loaded . I am shooting F class 70 rds per match =/-

Same here. Using rifle for mid range f-class and shooting good to win. I have a back up rifle I could switch to when the barrel goes on this one. Just ordered more brass to Fireform because other batch of brass is starting to get loose primers after 6 reloads. I hope the barrel doesn’t go from forming more brass. Perhaps I should purchase my own reamer along with a new barrel for next season.

Get your brass hydroformed. DJ’s brass on here does a great job. Its close enough to complete you can definitely use it in f-class- i know a lot of guys that won over the years forming from br. Youll have a headstart on that and not waste the barrel doing it

Bore scopes have put more barrels in the trash can than rounds fired. Your target will tell you when it quits shooting.
