Do I need a 270WSM ?

Guys, I own a 7mm-08, a 243, and a 6.5 Creedmoor. I like them all and shoot each one frequently. Today I ran across a great deal ($450) on a like new Remington SPS in 270WSM. It has less than a box of ammunition through it and is fitted with a new Burris Fullfield scope. I don't need it, but for that price I almost hate to turn it down.

Will this caliber fill a needed gap for me? I'm not a competitive shooter at all, but I do reload and enjoy chasing accuracy. Except for some noncompetitive range time all of my guns are hunting rifles.

And does anyone have any experience with this cartridge and want to give me any good or bad advice?

Buy it for the value. You can play with it some and determine if it is what you want. You won't lose anything in the resale of it.

Sounds like a decent deal, but id pass personally. Remington SPS is the bottom of the barrel model 700 in the lineup. A 270 WSM has stout recoil in a hunting rifle set up. If you like the compact cartridge design and want some extra knockdown power for hunting, I'd recommend looking out for a 300 WSM or 300 SAUM. The 30 cal family has much better bullet selection for hand loading and will deliver a bigger punch at long range with the right bullets

I had a SPS 270wsm. Not the prettiest rifle but tuned up the trigger a bit and it was a shooter! Really shined with handloaded 130gr Accubonds and also shot Federal 130gr TTSX into 1/2" groups at 100. Sold it to a buddy as his first deer rifle and I've been trying to buy it back ever since! Go for it!

What sniper said ^^^ I have one in a 700 XCR and took it on a "long walk" deer hunt last year, was nice to carry, but it dose pack a little punch on my shoulder!! I still have the rifle, think I will turn it into a creed one day. By the way if you buy it, I have some brass to get rid of ;)

don't get silly. never turn a deal like that.lol. I built one for my son, it turned out to be a tack driver.140gr nosler accubonds. 4 yrs.in a row here in PA.killed his buck, 1 shot.DRT.GO FOR IT. WHO CARES WHAT PRETTY DOES. IT'S A GUN FOR HUNTING. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR DECISION
I PUT MY VERSION VAIS BRAKE ON IT,SO I CAN'T SAY IF THE KICK IS BAD.

They very well could be tack drivers! Mine was givin to me and I didn't want to reload for it so I was just shooting factory loads

$450 for the rifle / scope combo is a good price!

I have an ugly, inexpensive, lightweight Model 70 in 270 WSM that I use for hunting and don't find the recoil offensive. It's quite accurate with my handloads and is the rifle that I pull out of the rack if I know that I'm shooting at critters that are a long-ways-out-there.

I have the Winchester version a well. Absolutely love it. Loaded with the 130 Accubonds and it's a hammer. Killed more deer DRT with one shot than any rifle I hunt with. Sighted in at 200 yards, I am good to 400 with hold overs. Shoots extremely flat. Shot a deer at 200 yards in 2008. Deer was facing me. Put the cross hair on the white patch on chest/neck and squeezed off the shot. When I skinned the deer out, I found the bullet at the back of the right ham. Bullet traveled the entire body length of the deer. recovered bullet weighed 87.10 grains. Live weight of deer was 180/185 lbs. I like the caliber.

270wsm kicks like a mule! My 338 lapua is easier going..

Seriously? I always pictured the 338 as a pile driver when it came to recoil.

Anyway ...... I'm going to pass on the rifle. And I do appreciate all the input. My son wants to add another shotgun to the inventory so I'm going to put the funds there for now.

I just went through this with a great deal on a pair of .270 WSMs, one Browning, one Weatherby. I decided against it. I don't have a .270 Win, so I don't keep .277" bullets in inventory, already, but do keep 6mm, 7mm, and .30. When I ran the numbers, the .270 WSM had a slight advantage (about 2") in drop with a 130gr over my 7mm Rem Mag with 139gr at 400 or so yards, but beyond that, my 7mm had the advantage with just about every load. The .270 WSM is neat, but I've heard feeding can be unreliable in some rifles, so I decided not to bother risking it with one I couldn't try out, first. It offers a lot, but not enough to justify another caliber that overlaps so much with the three 7mm Rem Mags I already have. That's not to say I won't eventually pick up a .270 WSM.

I don't know why you wouldn't need a 270WSM and probably several other calibers as well. Can't have too many, if you get bored with it, sell it.
