Diving into a 22 Creedmoor

I just neck down 6mm Creedmoor brass with mine. I use Starline SRP brass since Lapua didn't make it when I built my rifle. I use mine for hunting with a suppressor, so my barrel is only 20" long. The barrel is from X-Caliber, 1-7 twist 5R rifling, and have been very happy with it.
I tried using RL 26 powder, but didn't have good results with a shorter barrel than most are using, but H4350 & RL 17 work great in it. I mainly shoot 75gr ELD-M's out of it, but also shoot 80 & 88 grain bullets.
The best group (5 shots) I've got with it is .179", but generally it'll shoot in the .3" range.
It's a fun gun to shoot!

Is the reloaded 17 been working as good as h4350 for you?

Hmm. shute. I was pondering converting all my 6br stuff over to 20br for sage rats next spring in a shorter varmint bbl. From what you say I assume 20 cal would even be worse?

Keith Olson is one my customers and he shoots ground squirrels by the thousands with his 20 Sploder at well over 4000 fps with a 10 twist.

I think the problem that Walt was describing is too much twist. I could be wrong.

Good! Now that I have the 6xc's I dont shoot my 6br anymore but have piles of components > 20br!

The main problem with the 22 Creedmoor or the 22-250AI is with sustained fire. The barrel will get so hot that the bullet core will melt causing failure. I experienced this after 10 rounds of a 20 round match.
What load are you shooting and barrel twist? I’ve put over 2200 rounds through my 22CM and have only lost 4 bullets. For across the course, we shoot 40 rounds rapid fire per match, and I’ve never lost one during rapids, just on the 600 yard slow fires, and with a new barrel (sub 600 rounds). And those were slightly warmer days here in Phoenix running Vihtuvouri powders, which are NOT as temp stable as they claim

If I remember correctly, 4831SC under several types of 80s. 8 twist. Well over 3000fps. The last straw was 100-9x first 10 at 600. Then a 10 off call, a 9 way off call. Then 8 puffs that looked like ackack.

I have chambered several 22 creedmoor barrels for different customers over the last couple years. I think its a fine cartridge but personally I prefer a 22GT and better yet a 22BR. I had a 22 CM barrel for myself and it shot well but it didn't shoot better than my 22GT. The GT had the same speed and it uses less powder.
Good luck with your project. I have no doubt you will enjoy it!!
Lee Gardner Precision.
The 22GT can shoot the same bullets at the same speed as a 22 Creedmoor? That's certainly a no brainer then of which to choose. Thanks

Is case capacity the same using 6 CM lapua vs 22 250 lapua cases. I’m using 6 CM cases & turning them .
Not sure. If you weigh a fired 6 Creedmoor case and then fill it with water to the top of the neck, I can check one of mine for a reference. Use a drop or two of liquid soap and you'll get a bit of a meniscus at top of the water level...makes it easier to check. -Al

Wow. I’ve never experienced that many failures in a row. Mine were spread out over three matches and backing off the load a half grain solved all of my problems. I’m currently slinging 88’s at 3160 over N550. Yes, it is a hot load, but it seems to shoot amazing considering the round count on my barrel.

I don’t think it’s quite the same speeds. But close maybe. Most of the guys on Snipers Hide are saying about 36 grains of h4350 with 90’s out of a 26” gets them ~3000fps.

I’m running 37.5 of N550 (VV rough equivalent to h4350) with an 88 out of a 26” and getting 3160. So….. not really sure if there is much merit to the claim the GT uses much less powder. (Note, this load is not for a fresh barrel! Only a well worn barrel with no throat left)

WOW...Very nice shooting!
What type of velocities are you getting with the pictured load?

I can assure you that Wilson uses as good of steel as anyone else.

I'm glad to hear someone had the same performance that I have seen from the Wilson.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised to say the least.

I sold Cooper rifles for a long time though so I knew the barrels were good.

I wanted to post an update, and this 22 Creedmoor thread seemed a good one.
Prone match yesterday here in Phoenix. 95SSMK over 40g of N165 set to 2.860 COAL. Petersen 22 CM brass (SRP, new). Kreiger 7twist barrel with 700 rounds.
The 7 off left was a sighter, and I called the high 9. Otherwise, that’s a 16 shot group at 500 yards. I didn’t adjust elevation as I wanted to see how it grouped. And I only adjusted windage from the first wide right 10
