I do believe the hostages were released moments after Reagan was sworn in.
Terrorism is having the ability to do what the other won’t.
To me it’s a simple solution.

Pretty sure Reagan's people were working behind the scenes to delay the hostage release to detriment of Carter. I think was and is a federal offense. The only people who are supposed to negotiate or speak on behalf of US are US officials. There were a bunch of old mid east hands that knew how to work the back channels, and they did. That said, I would send word to Tehran that the next MF (who is an Iranian buddy, protected group etc) that throws a rock at a US warship, there will be a colossal destruction of some Iranian asset(s).

Not to get off the track, but the ROK ( Republic of Korea) marines in Vietnam were totally avoided by the NVA and the VC. Why? Ruthless heartless butchers who killed everything that moved. That included women and children and their livestock and homes.

I can attest to that. We worked with ROK Marines in RVN in '66. The US Marines I talked to returning from the bush related to us that those guys were virtual animals in combat, and did total destruction to the enemy in every way possible, complete with body mutilation. Virtually nothing was left alive....or whole.
