Dilemma reloading AR15 for NRA High Power

You definately don't want to spend to much on brass shooting XC. After a string of fire you'll be extremely lucky to recover all you spent brass.

77's for 200/300 Mag lenth
80's for 600 touching the lands.

Get a dry firing device, money well spent.

Have Fun.............

One thing i noticed in your original post is you ordered a 1/2 min sight. I think you will be much happier down the road with a 1/4 x 1/4 sight. That is the standard nowadays

I decided to go with the 1/2 x 1/2 MOA rear sights because I used to have a Springfield Loaded M1a with Smith NM Hooded rear sights that were also in 1/2 x 1/2 MOA. It's just what I'm used to.

For 600yds I couldn't do better than the JLK 80gr VLDsat the lands and a stout charge of Varget and CCI-BR4s. Same chamber and barrel as yours but a wee longer barrel.

Do yourself a favor and get this book before you buy anymore stuff for NRA Across the Course: http://zediker.com/books/ar15/ar15main.html

Some of it is a bit dated but its all reavent to a new ( Im guessing your new... If not my appolgies) HighPower just getting into the game. The trend now that I am seeing is more and more folks shooting there 77gr Sierra Magazine length loads all the way back to 600 yards. After taking in Zediker's info and loading up a acceptable conisistant accurate load it up and practice practice practice and more practice.
Norma Brass: Complete waste of money for a Service rifle with a post front sight. Spend your money else where.

Welcome to the sport...Good to hear your intrested.

What is the dry fire device folks are recommending?

I would also recommend dry firing, but I have never used anything besides my empty rifle to do it.

As to the load, what others have said about 77's and 80's is correct. The loads are tried and true, and unless you just enjoy load development, there is not really any need to do any for Service Lifle loads. Pick any recipe from the WOA website and it will shoot better than you are capable of holding. Lake City brass is fine. I mostly used Winchester brass when I shot SR. I'd dare to say that until you are into the high end of the High Master category, you will not be able to see a difference in things like brass, maybe not even then. Shooter error is a much larger factor in HP than loads are.

Good luck,
Erik

It's a plastic rod-thingy, tapered a bit on one (both?) ends that slips into the back end of an AR bolt carrier. Idea is it prevents hammer contact on firing pin and also vastly reduces the length one has to 'cycle the bolt' manually to effect cocking the trigger.

I have one somewheres & could post a link too I suppose but kinda grumpy this morning so check out your vendor-of-choice's website before asking me to help out....

I will definitely go ahead and buy the Zediker book "The Competitive AR15". I have 6 months to read so I will order more AR15 books other than just that one. I want a Army Training Manual for the M16A2. If anyone knows where I can get one please let me know!

I have been looking at the Sierra reloading manual for the 223 Rem for the AR15...

I see why the 77 gr. Sierra is very popular for across the course because the COAL is 2.260" which makes it loadable into a magazine. I think this bullet is the winner that I was looking for :). One bullet, one powder, magazine loadable for across the course.

Should I call John Hollinger and switch my sight order to the 1/4 x 1/4 MOA instead? If so, why?

And thank you all for the information! It's very much appreciated!

a 1/4 x 1/4 sight will give you greater control of sight in at longer distances.

1/4" at 100 yards, is 1" at 400, or 2" at 800 yards. The 1/2 x 1/2 is twice that, or 4" adjustment at 800 yards. The better resolution can help center the group instead of a need for a different hold position.

I would skip the FM Manual for the M16. It will not have any relevent infomation to what your going to do. After you get your sharp shooter card you will be head and shoulders above what the average Army soldier can accomplish with an AR. They just dont teach Marksmanship anymore. Some where along the line they kept streamlining the instruction to the point its worthless. Makes it better right???? This is comming from a 22 year Veteran who just retired...So no flaming needed.

The Zediker series are all good books with alot of good winter reading... It will keep you busy and guide you into good purchases on a budget and good training for getting started. Tubb's books are geared more for the Match rifle and very little for the Service rifle.

You will be hard pressed to find a better load of 23gr to 24gr of Varget with Lake City Brass, ( or Winchester) A CCI 450 Primer ( or Tula SRM) and a Sierra 77gr MatchKing seated to 2.26" for Mag length.
Thousands of Highpower shooters are shooting that load. Tried and proven. Please work up to that load!!!!! Dont be foolish starting at 23gr.

I use Nosler 77gn Custom Competition for 200,300 and Infantry Trophy at 600yds. Box of 1K is around $165, they shoot as well as the SMK's in my Compass Lake 1:7 barrel.
The Hornady 75gn (not the A-Max's) are used by a number of shooters across the course too, especially the 1:8 twist barrels. They are also less expensive as the SMK's.
Either way you go these loads will get you through a year or so of competing until you need the extra advantage the 80's give at 600. If your range is not too windy during season you won't really need the 80's anyhow. They shine when winds are switching around and suddenly changing velocity as you fire. Then the 80's help some as they don't get blown as much.

+1 for 1/4min sights too.

Just called White Oak and amended my order. I ordered the 1/4 x 1/4 MOA sights.

Thank you all for your help :)

Joshua

You are most welcome, and enjoy your 1/4 x 1/4 sights. May you always hit the X's

PS 23.4 gr Varget in my WOA 20" barrel works great! Please do read that article on ladder testing for developing your own load.
