Digital scale, FX-120i

It's targets like this that cause me to not leave any stones unturned...

Now I can't say it was because I didn't sort the primers. Most likely I just screwed the pooch, or a condition changed. Someday I would like to join the likes of Matt, Jim , and Mike and shoot a ten shot 2 incher. I just can't imagine getting there by doing things half assed lol. When the day comes that it becomes no fun, I would just take a break from it.

Tom

I don't even shoot benchrest and that target hurts.... That's still some fancy shooting nonetheless. Drew

Of all the tasks required to develop precision ammunition, sorting has to be the step/process I don't care to do. I do it with brass and bullets and now thanks to Donovan, Tom and Matt I guess I better get with the program and start sorting primers. Just when I think I have a handle on the process something else gets added. Thanks boys. Just kidding of course and thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.

Hope 2017 brings you small groups and high scores.

I'm a bit confused about the need for a 3rd decimal when weighing powder. On average a kernel of RL17 is .02 grains. My FX-120i already has too much resolution for that. I have seen larger and smaller kernels; a few mutants that weigh .01. But what am I supposed to do with that? Weight-sort powder kernels? Re-throw the load two or three times to get that .005 resolution? The trickler can't choose whether fat or skinny kernel pops out?

BLUF, to the OP....I have an FX-120I and Auto-trickler and they are more than adequate for the tactical-type rifle matches I shoot in Colorado with heavy winds. Most targets are limited or single engagement and under 800 with a few out to 1000. This probably creates my bias to such intricate weight-sorting style of tactics as I don't shoot 1000yd strings for aggregate scores.

Just an update. I ended up buying an Entris64-1s. I'm sure the FX-120i would satisfy my needs. I liked the idea of having a scale that could weigh to thousands just in case I ever decide to go down that rabbit hole. I don't have the time to shoot FClass but that will change in a couple years and I've been down the sell and upgrade road before.

I enjoyed the responses. I appreciated the PMs. There's obviously more than one way to think about a scale, to each their own. Thanks again, it was very helpful to me.

Darn it!!!!!!!!!!!

Now you , and others, have me thinking about an upgrade........

I am seeing people sorting primers, looks like for good reasons! However, I am not sure sorting them into batches and storing them together as I have seen in the photos is too good of an idea. I think there is a reason why when we buy primers they don’t come in a bottle but separated individually. I think this is to prevent one primer going off and setting the rest off (I think these is actually a name for this). I honestly don’t know how risky this is (I am guessing low) but probably best I think to re-segregated them after sorting. Not a wise guy but just an observation.

I'm sharing this link for those that may want more info on the
Entris64-1S. There's some basic information and comparisons made on the bottom half of the page. The difference in price between the FX-120i and the Entris64-1S is less than what I thought. Roughly 350.00. I thought those that were deciding on a digital scale might find this basic info useful, along with the opinions already shared. When you add the Entris64-1S to your cart the price is under 1000.00.

The primers use to come all together before a forklift driver with a 30 ton forklift bounced a couple cases off and ran over them. Matt

Tom – I think putting them back in their original container is probably the way to go.

Matt - that forklift story is that real? Just interested in reading more about it. I also heard a while ago about an employee involved in primer manufacturing that was carelessly carrying a bucket of the stuff when the whole thing went off…

FWIW, if one goes to the SAAMI site and look under “Primer storage”, it says “Do not transfer the primers from this approved container into one which is not approved. The use of glass bottles, fruit jars, plastic or metal containers or other bulk containers for primer storage is extremely hazardous”. I doubt that the stuff stored this will spontaneously blow up but there is probably some risk involved. Which is the reason for my original comments.

I use to weigh them and put them in plastic drawers until I seen they were sticking together! Now I save the containers and put them back in and mark them.

How about powder stored in a dispenser? Do you take 1 primer at a time out of the factory box? Sometimes life is just a risk.
If you actually read my post... the POINT is not to go crazy and be scared of everything. I personally think it is fine to put them together for dispensing and sorting. The point is to not always store them that way....

There is also a huge difference between putting them in something DESIGNED to hold them out of the box vs. something that you THINK is OK because "well if I can use them outside the box then I can store them in anything I want right???" It's thoughts like those that get in into trouble fast.

That's what I was told. I belive it was Federal and that is why the coatings came about. Also the individual dividers. Matt
