Digital Powder Dispensers.. what about the hornady?

http://www.accurateshooter.com/gear-reviews/digital-powder-dispensers-part-one/

i was reading this, but has anyone tested the hornady vs rcbs?

I have an RCBS. I haven't used or tested the Hornady but what drives you to want one?

From the research I made I found that most people liked the RCBS better. The Hornady over threw often, from what I read. If you search you should be able to find my thread.

Here is the Chargemaster from cabelas. On sale for $299 - a $50 mail in rebate. The rebate doesn't work in Canada tho :(

There was a thread on here and the fella loved his hornady unit and didnt have overthrow problems. It is true though that if you search the articles on the main page they tested all the three units and came to the conclusion the rcbs is the most accurate for the money.I think the lyman was second and hornady was the last pick.Look it up under articles. It is there and should help you make a good decision.I hope this helps .

in the artical, the hornady wasnt tested, the PACT was... ive been checking other forums, so far i have heard any bad on the hornady

Articles I've read on the Hornady were favorable.Call Sinclair and talk to a tech for his opinion/comparison.The feature I was interested in,was the speed, which can be set faster than any other dispensor.Price on sale is down under $200.I use a Lyman DPS 3,which is fine. The Hornady wasn't available when I needed one.I would expect any make dispensor to throw accurate loads with most powders,or send it back.

i can get the horandy for 180 ish.... i was told to look at this as well, but haven't scene much info on them

I like the PACT-Grey/RCBS-Green ones with the IR port, they throw usually in the .04 range, but read only .1, I throw from them and then trickle up on a 1/100 th scale.

I have used the Hornady unit a fair amount in the last 8 months or so for Long Range and Palma loading and love it. Basically I dial in loads .2 gr. less than I want and trickle the last .1-.2 gr. with a MANUAL trickler (which I find more controllable). I set the manual trickler on top of the base with a piece of rubber or wood as a stand. IN this way I can obtain loads to the last .05 gr. accuracy and still save a ton of time in the charging/seating operation. Without the trickler it throws loads within .15 gr. which actually makes some damn accurate loads but I go for every advantage at 1000 yds.. As with any unit, letting it warm up before one starts dispensing loads is paramount! It will be erratic without a 10-15 min. warm up time.

What do you do for the "warm up"?

Been using one since December. Would be lost without it as it spoiled me.

Documentation sucks. A phone call works if you find issues. Never had a problem with warm-up. Early on I checked each charge with a manual scale. It is +-.1 gr.

It will overcharge. Mostly, when that happens, it's a grain or two higher. I just dump a bit back into the hopper, set the pan back down and mostly it's on. If not, manually trickle up.

Powder type seems to determine how many overages you get. I tried a straw but success was not conclusive, so I went back to just using the tube. Friends have RCBS units. They over also at times. I see no real difference in the amount of overages between the units.

While the RCBS has many documented parameters that can be tweaked, the Hornady only has one documented and I (so far) have found an undocumented parameter (I posted in http://www.accurateshooter.com/forum/index.php/topic,361729.45.html ) that really minimizes the overthrows. I don't think more is really necessary just like on-board memory to store loads. I too, am not sure the straw is making that much difference.

I am still quite pleased with my Hornady and don't wonder about the RCBS. I used the $$$ I saved to buy more bullets & powder.

I have used the PACT for the last year. It throws 1/10 under 99.9% of the time I have had no issues whats-so-ever with this machine. It fills my 6mm as fast as I can move them from one tray to another.

I have the Hornady re-loader and I love it. It does overthrow occasionally on the normal setting but I use the slow setting and have very few problems. I would buy it again if I had the choice. I am very pleased with the accuracy of the powder dispensing.
